Curse you Windows 11 update
« on: October 02, 2023, 12:32:07 PM »
I am on day three of trying to rebuild my Dell desktop after the latest Windows 11 update.  After doing a system restore, running various repair tools, backing up from an external hard drive and endless research, things seem to be improving.  Rather than freezing up every hour or so, requiring a hard power off to reset, it is now down to a freeze once a day or so.  The majority of opinion on the Net seems to be an incompatibility with the latest update with Nvidia cards/drivers, and the Intel Killer ethernet driver suite.  I have finally been able to uninstall Killer and the associated services, and apparently you have to activate an experimental feature on the video drivers to reduce the problem.  Looking for driver conflicts, the event viewer and the reliability monitor has been less than helpful.  I hope things improve.

Have you gone to Nvida's website and manually downloaded the latest driver from there? Often Windows update will be a few versions behind.

Yes, and according to the hardware monitor, all the fans are running and temps are normal. The computer hardware and settings have been unchanged and problem free for a couple of years. The only thing that has changed is the software.

Is your on-board video disabled in the BIOS?  I would assume it is, but it's worth double-checking.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

I have not, but that is a heck of an idea.  I just downloaded and installed a RTX 3070 driver from back in June.  Everything was running well then.  I will report back.

So since I took WLJ's suggestion and downloaded an older version of the Nvidia driver, no more crashes.  I am cautiously optimistic.  It turns out that the latest Windows 11 update (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/september-26-2023-windows-configuration-update-542780c2-594c-46cb-979d-11116fe164ba) cannot be rolled back.

I knew the Collective would come through!

Hmm
Had an odd video glitch and guess what, Nvidia video card, GTX 1060.
System didn't crash but video glitched for a moment.
So maybe the latest W11 update mucked something up in the driver or Nvidia did, or both. Nvidia is notorious for putting out glitchly drivers.

Our 15+ year old TV died to day. I blame Windows 11
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!
