Are any of you guys using the latest iterations of the portable (e.g., Nuvi) vehicle GPS units?
My interest is in having backup GPS when I'm in BFE and my Google nav goes out for lack of service. While the 4Runner has built-in GPS (which while mediocre in the city, is actually really good offroad), the F150 just has the basic media unit. I keep a Nuvi in it, but the Nuvi is over ten years old and I see that Garmin has replaced Nuvis with the Garmin Drive.
From what I'm seeing, some of the Garmin Drives are similar to phone navigation apps, with voice directions and allowing voice search (I hate typing on the Nuvi), and when paired with 4G (or even from the onboard database), will work similar to Google Nav as far as locating businesses, etc.
I'm asking about the Drives for when I'm on actual roads. When I'm really offroading (which I don't do with the F150 anyway), I use Backcountry Navigator on the phone so I can get high rez maps and not have to rely on a cell signal. This is specifically if I'm in crappy cell areas where Google Nav doesn't work, or if the new Garmin Drives are as good as they claim, to even use it instead of Google Nav in my neverending quest to wean myself of Google.
And because I know some wiseguy will say something about relying on electronics, yes, I keep paper maps in the vehicles.
