Kaspersky anti-virus banned in the US
« on: June 29, 2024, 04:04:04 PM »
The Biden admin banned it due to it's ties to Russia and also says it can install malware. The latter could be a pile on excuse.

I like the comments from the link about "Kaspersky must have discovered one of the current US gov spyware programs. "  =)

I have always had lingering concerns about Kaspersky, for just this reason. However, most computer professionals don't seem to be worried about it.

I am more concerned about WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft Office), which is Chinese. You can't convince me there isn't spyware built into that.

Other than Chinese stuff, I feel more comfortable with a lot of non-US security software (antivirus, VPN, etc.) than I do with many US based companies, who are practically salivating to rat me out if it's the right administration (like now) in power. Google will be safe from US govt overreach and giving up my personal data once Trump is back in power. Unless the deep state is undermining Trump and looking for right wing extremists, of course.

What is scary is I tend to believe this a lot more than I do the "official" explanation. Like all of those random portable cell towers that pop up in the strangest places for improved coverage! ;)

They were the first to discover Stuxnet… This sucks, not only do i have Kaspersky running on all of my PCs, i also have it deployed to about half of my clients of use a paid antivirus, and all of them that use a free one. Looks like I’ll have a busy few weeks trying to convince people that they have to switch over to Eset, even though they still have time left with their Kaspersky subscriptions. Quite a few will have multiple years remaining on the sub they’re walking away from. Now to find a decent free AV… AVG and Avast have always annoyed me.

Yeah, well, to be honest, we all are, Ben, we all are...

I'm not sure, but wasn't Kaspersky pulled off the government use list about 10 years ago when Trump was in charge?

Moves to BFE Idaho, lays low, and only visits a 1990s style internet forum that no one has ever heard of and that is filled with people-hating curmudgeons, and is still not safe from being ratted out by somebody looking for an extra wheel of government cheese.

I sniffed around and the story goes that somehow a .gov employee allowed a .gov spyware be discovered by Kapersky.  Was employee outside of the supersecret.gov network? Did .gov employee take it home from work?  Did some .gov IT doofus install Kapersky  on a .gov system with the option to send questionable files to Kapersky for analysis? IDFK but .gov's supersecret spyware was sent to Kapersky for analysis.

Kapersky was immediately banned from.gov computers and now from yours and mine.
7-11 was a part time job.

Stuff melted beautifully.

We used to do that at scout camp all the time when I was on staff.
