The US Navy's Gender Neutral Submarines
« on: September 17, 2024, 09:20:39 AM »
This has been making the rounds in the last couple of days. The Navy's newest sub is "gender neutral", which as the link points out, is not really gender neutral, but more coed. "Gender neutral" seems to be more of a "check the box" terminology.

If they're going to have male and female sailors on a sub, and I guess just like with aircraft, there's a lot of jobs that both can do equally well, I don't have a problem with stuff like separate heads if it doesn't affect the rest of the design. However, if you have to make design changes so that (apparently women only) can get a boost into the upper rack, or design piping systems with lower valves and controls so women can reach them, then maybe those particular women shouldn't be on a sub. Aren't there short guys on subs?

And why is this a big new deal with subs? Women have been serving on ships for decades now. I've not heard of special accommodations on critical systems and structures on ships so that they are more accessible to women.

SSN-711 was retired in 2017
SSN-810 San Fran has been ordered but I don't think he/she/it has even been laid down yet.

Edit: Doesn't show a keel laying date yet https://www.nvr.navy.mil/SHIPDETAILS/SHIPSDETAIL_SSN_810.HTML

Note I said he/she/it so are you assuming the boat's gender?

Well, a submarine is long and hard and full of seamen, so you do the gender math there...

This is actually way better than what I feared.  I saw these headlines today and figured the Navy was making some big deal about not calling this boat "her" like all the other ships.

Just making a coed sub? Sure, fine no biggie.  Just have a good plan for getting the pregnant sailors off mid cruise.

As a guy that had to deal with females on vessels not designed for coed use, It's actually a good idea.  that way you don't have to put female E3's in the senior berthing just to make the numbers work, or take the Officers head away from the officers to make it female.  steps and low valves I would say really are gender neutral, because there's short dudes out there.

She won't be able to consent until she's eighteen.

That's correct.  Construction is in Newport News.

But Electric Boat HQ is in CT. Those perverts will try at 16
