MS will allow users to extend W10 support for 1 year for $30

Came out in a MS blog and it's the first time they've offered an ESU like this to consumers, after 1 year who knows.
So if you don't want to upgrade to W11 or can't for whatever reason or don't want to switch to Linux you do have this as an option for another year of support.

I think I had read somewhere that the option can go up to three years, but the price increases for each year.

Not a good option for anyone with multiple old Windows 10 computers ...

There's a Windows 11 hack called Tiny11 that supposedly both bypasses the hardware requirement and eliminates all the bloat, allowing "underpowered" computers to run Windows 11. Does anyone know anything about it?

The three year option with increasing prices is for the business version if I remember correctly.  The consumer version will be a one year extension for $30.  Supposedly there will be no further extensions after that.  Unclear if that consumer version covers all Windows 10 computers in a household, or if it's just for one computer.

That rings a bell. You are probably correct.

Has anyone experimented with Tiny11?

Haven't experimented with Tiny11, but it's on my radar for something to try.  I've got three or four Windows 10 machines around here that it might work on.

I just tried to install W11 23H2 on a 4th gen I5 machine using Rufus and the installer said my machine doesn't meet minimum requirements.  (I disabled checking for that when I built the install media)  It only has 4GB of memory; I wonder if that's the problem?  But I thought that was specifically one of the checks I disabled.

So I guess I need to figure out a Linux distro I like.  (probably start with LDME)  I haven't done anything with Linux in several years so any info I have is out-of-date.

Thanks.  Rufus 4.6 complained about the iso I was using.  Something about the boot loader and warned me not to use it unless I got it from a trusted source.  (I got it from archive.org)  So I downloaded 24H2 direct from Microsoft (I can't find 23H2 there) and am trying again.  24H2 is  better test anyway, I just wanted to ease into it.

24H2 installed just fine on a Dell Optiplex 3020 and seems to run okay.  But there are two missing device drivers: "SM Bus Controller" and "PCI Simple Communications Controller".  I checked at dell.com and they have no W11 drivers because they say this model does not support 11.  They seemed kinda smug about it. 

I may try to figure out what they are and try installing W10 drivers.  (the SM driver might be an Intel driver rather than Dell)

Check optional updates on the windows updating page in settings.

W10 drivers usually install just fine

That took care of it.  Thanks.  I had checked windows update, and I had done a "check for drivers" in device manager, but I had not scrolled down to the optional updates on WU.

Our church has basically the same computer in the office, so this means I'll be able to get W11 running on it.  I think it has the 64-bit version installed so I should be able to do a slip install on that.

Bear in mind when doing this nothing is stopping MS from pulling the plug on running W11 on "unsupported" hardware in the future. They already hard coded enforced the SSE4.2 requirement with 24H2 which cut off PCs with CPUs without it and Rufus can't bypass it.

That's a very good point.  But the church uses the computer so little, if it does go belly-up we can do without it for a week while I replace it or get it running Linux.  The laptop up front that runs the PowerPoint projector and plays occasional videos is more critical (and it's older), might be time to replace it.

I'm running W11 on my i5 6200U laptop which is "unsupported". If MS even does pull the plug I have no problem going to Linux on it. YMMV.
BTW: All the W10 drivers for the laptop installed without issue.

I upgraded the church computer to 11 yesterday.  It's a Dell Optiplex 7020.  It's very similar to the spare 3020 I have at home except the church computer has a 4th gen i3 processor instead of i5, and it has a SSD.  I think the 7020 might be a little older because I didnt see any USB 3.0 ports.  Both only have 4GB of DDR3 RAM. 

W11 runs very well on the 7020, probably because of the SSD, but several devices show up as red ! in Device Manager, and windows update optional updates doesn't find anything.  I'm going to download all the latest W7 updates from dell.com and apply them and see what happens.  If everything is working, I'm not sure how much the missing drivers matter.

Check Dell's website for W10 drivers, so far every W10 driver I've installed in 11 has installed with zero issues.
