Used Gun Prices?
« on: December 03, 2024, 08:16:33 AM »
Anybody have links to current gun value / guns for sale websites that give anywhere near accurate ideas of what used guns go for? Not necessarily collectibles, but more run of the mill guns. That is, not sites like Gunbroker, where Glock 19s go for $800.

For Gunbroker, I thought you need to see what is "sold" versus someone asking high prices.

IMO, you could look at used police trade-in prices to gauge the used versus new.  I don't see G19 pistols used much, but you do see other Glock models.  The G19 would probably sell better than the duty models.  The price is going to be some number less than new.  I haven't found that upgrades, accessories, or extra mags get people to pay much extra unless you know someone determined not to fill out a 4473.  There might be exceptions.

Gunbroker, completed auctions, tag off "used" and uncheck "new" and "new old stock", sort by number of bids to filter out the $800 G19s that nobody actually bids on.

To be clear, I was only using the G19 as a ubiquitous example, I'm not looking for one.

I recognize that some prices on Gunbroker are fairly accurate, but I find it hard to figure out which ones, especially if I'm not familiar with the gun. I'm looking at comparing amongst multiple sites to find some average. We have a good "buy and sell" (of everything) website in Idaho with what I find to be quite accurate market prices on guns, but the inventory is nowhere near the size of sites like Gunbroker, so it's hit or miss on finding a particular gun.

I usually prefer new unless there is some good reason to go for used.  Most people want to get their money back out of a gun and the discount isn't worth it unless you get extras you want.

Further clarification - I'm looking to sell some safe queens.

I gave that up earlier this year.  On a local site, stuff was moving slow unless it was very collectable.  People had to drop the price a bit to get the sale.

Things may have shifted a bit now.  However, the first of the year isn't the best time either.

Good to know. I'm in no hurry, and was actually going to consign them to my LGS for store credit, but I wanted some numbers that I got on my own to compare with theirs.

I would just ask the dealer.  If he is turning over his inventory pretty good, then sales are up and people are buying.

If the news is full of rioting next year, people might start buying again.

I mean, I was kinda hoping I could sell them at inflated prices to all the newly sterilized Handmaids out there that are gun shopping right now.

I went through that as well.  I could probably sell off several guns that have become safe queens.  I just figure I need to hold off.

Around 2018 or 2019, I was getting ready to break down several cheaper AR's and stow them in a tote for later as AR prices were low I figured there was no way I would ever get any money back out of them.  Then along came 2020.  Covid and the "summer of love" turned that around.  I didn't make money, but I was able to sell for what I put into them for the most part.  Some of the pistols I sold pretty cheap, but it was stuff I was happy to get rid of.

I have come to the conclusion that trading in guns usually doesn't get you much, but is much easier than selling yourself and still gets you closer to the gun you want.

And I didn't think you were.  My use of "G19" was also as a common example.

I've used the GB search to check to see if local asking prices were sane or not.

Regionally, I see things go for more than I hear about them going for elsewhere.

Had you thought of posting them here?

I know Glock pistols were just an example, but I saw this in an AIMSurplus email today.  I guess most face-to-face buyers aren't on their email list.
