Trump's Big, Beautiful, Bill
« on: May 22, 2025, 09:26:15 AM »
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/22/salt-deduction-trump-tax-bill.html

So, part of the bill is an intent to bump up the State and Local Tax deduction from $10,000 to $40,000.

The $10,000 limit was passed during Trump's first term.

It's caught me every year since because I have a home with a mortgage and property taxes in one of the most expensive areas of the country.

So, when do we start hearing the left screeching about this being a tax cut for Trump's rich buddies?

God knows that I'm not one of Trump's rich buddies, but I'll be damned happy if it passes.

The SALT deduction increase is a subsidy to states with high tax rates which shifts the burden of their high rates to more fiscally responsible states.  It reduces the pressure to lower taxes in those regions.  It's an obvious play to mollify extremely liberal, high tax regions at a direct cost to low tax regions.

Oh, wait, you're actually serious.

Virtually all of those states are blue states. There's no such thing as "pressure" to lower taxes in those states.

If anything it's more FASTER BUREAUCRAT! TAX! TAX!

For 40 years or so the Republicans have fairly consistently been trying to roll back taxes at the federal level.

And liberals have been using that as their excuse to consistently raise taxes at the state and local level. After all, if the Feds aren't going to take it, we've got to take it because we simply can't trust Joe Sixpack with his own money.

I spent most of my life in one of the most expensive areas in one of the most expensive states in the country, and was against the SALT increases back then. It gives bad states a pass to keep their taxes high and/or to make them even higher. I will say that it was entertaining living in deep blue Santa Barbara where the wealthy screamed "Tax the rich!" but were also 100% in favor of the SALT increases because they were living in seven figure and higher homes, paying $10K/mo or more in mortgages, plus the 1.X% property taxes, which despite prop 13, continued to go up 1% per year.

Yes, and that should be your problem because you want to live in a deep blue state, but Trump is making it my problem.

There's no such thing as "pressure" to lower taxes in those states.
1. Even less so because taxpayers in those states don't have to carry the full burden of their choices of local officials.
2. Bullshit.  Outmigration is a thing and a number of blue states have had to make minor moves to reduce tax burden on lower and middle class taxpayers.  CT, MA, and NY have all incorporated reductions in some of their income taxes.  NJ has a property tax rebate and IL is working on property tax adjustments.  The SALT deduction increase relieves some of the pressure to do stuff like that.

Yes, Outmigration is a thing. A BIG thing. And it's been INCREDIBLY successful at getting states like California, Massachusetts, New York, etc., lower their tax rates to among the lowest in the nation.

The exactly opposite has been true. As people have fled, liberal states have increased their taxes to make up for the losses.

Oh, then obviously the proper thing to do is to pass your burden on to people outside those states.

I am sure this bill has a number of things I don't like, but for once it seems to also throw a bone to gun owners so those issues don't hit me quite as hard.  I want to see them add the dang SHORT Act in.

Same for me on both counts.

WA just passed one of biggest state level tax hikes ever.  Coincidentally I was renting a small trailer yesterday. The counter monkey said 1-way truck rentals (leaving the state) were making business tough.  Not as bad as CA, but getting there.

A friend of mine rented a trailer in California to bring back and airplane. He couldn't just drop it at any U Haul, he had to drive all the way back to California. They wouldn't even just sell it to him. Yes, my friend is a brilliant dumbass.

U-haul refuses to sell their trailers. When they reach the end of their lives they are cut up for scrap (UPS does the same with their package cars)

Breaking: DOJ Says Suppressors Can Not Be Banned......But Can Be Regulated Under The NFA
John Crump News

Finishing up this video now.  He talks about the title story at first, but then switched to talking about where the HPA and the Big Bill are going now.  Congress is on vacation pretty much through next week.  The Senate won't likely be back in session until the 1st week of June.  He did say the official goal is to get this bill passed through the Senate before July 4th, but before the end of June is expected.

He also mentioned the Big Bill goes to the Senate Finance Committee headed by Chairman Mike Crapo.  He is the one that reintroduced the HPA in the Senate in February.  He also reported wants to add a section 3 to it that would prevent states from banning them.  Might be getting my hopes up, but we will see.  Crapo is also an original cosponsor for the SHORT Act.  I guess that is a big reason why a lot of people think the HPA will pass the Senate and the SHORT Act is still not out.

Seems to me there is a good chance of getting some positive pro-gun outcomes from this.  I guess we need to keep the pressure up on our Senators to vote for this once it gets out of committee.  One of my Senators (John Cornyn) is on that committee along with Majority Leader Thune.

https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/crapo-reintroduces-hearing-protection-act

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/s1162/cosponsors

If they get all this passed, I am going to have to make some campaign donations as a small thank you.  I am not sure it will make me vote for Cornyn next year, but I will seriously consider it.

I'm trying to figure out what that means. Is it just a DOJ opinion that Trump can make go away if the original HPA reaches his desk? "Regulated under the NFA" sounds to me like the watered down "$0 tax stamp" version. I guess we need more info, but if this is an accurate statement, I reckon some hate will be flowing Pam Bondi's way.

EDIT: Looking into it a bit more, it appears to be an acting US Attorney, and he claims they fall under the NFA because they are so prone to use in crimes. Apparently the last two acting US attorneys that made similar dumbass comments regarding RKBA were let go. Maybe this guy will be shown the door as well. I read through his whole brief. It hurt my head.

Yeah, that is completely separate from the bill Congress is working on.  If the HPA passes, it will be moot.

I did hear according to Mr Guns and Gadgets that apparently the DOJ reversed their take that suppressors/silencers are not protected under the 2A, but now are. No link or supporting documentation, just what I heard.

I don't know the details of the bill, but I don't like tax cuts without corresponding spending cuts.  They just blow up the debt and add to inflation.  In that regard, Republicans are worse than the "tax and spend" Democrats.  I don't know how the DOGE cuts factor in, but I don't think they are significant unless they somehow reduce congressional spending.
