Dad and I recently came into ownership of a Mossberg 395KB bolt action 12 gauge.  It's darn cool, but it's kind of rusty.
I can't figure out how to remove the bolt from the the gun for proper cleaning.
Anyone out there can halp?
Google yields not much info, doesn't seem to be a very popular gun.

Been a long time since I messed with one of thse, but I THINK this is how you do it...

Open the bolt and pull it open about half an inch, then, as you slowly side the bolt back pull the trigger as far back as it will go.

Many inexpensive bolt action firearms used an extension on the trigger as the bolt stop.

If it's the same as my JC Higgens 20g, then there's a screw on the side of the action you must loosen a bit (or remove completely, I don't recall).

Do some research online before you shoot it though.  Some of the bolt action 12g guns were under a recall for faulty locking lugs.  Folks had the bolts ejected into their faces.  I'm pretty certain the recall was for the JC Higgens line, but Mossberg and a few other companies made the guns for Sears.  BTW, if you have an affected Higgens bolt action 12g, I think Sears still pays a $100 bounty for the bolts.

I had a Mossberg 185D.  You removed the bolt exactly as Mike described, by holding the trigger back.

From GPC's information on this gun (http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=0840z395KA) I can't see a bolt retaining screw, either in the schematic or the parts list.

However, the drawing of the trigger looks VERY much the same as the triggers on the inexpensive Mossberg .22s that retained the bolt with a trigger extension.

The only recall information I can find for Mossberg bolt shotguns is for the 695 produced in 1995 and 1996, and that was for inadvertently firing when the bolt was closed.

The Mossberg must be a different gun than my Higgins.  The schematic shows a box mag, while mine has a tube mag.  Not surprising though.  Mossberg and High Standard made the JC Higgens line.  I may have a High Standard model.

Depending on its age, it could also have been made by Stevens/Springfield. I'm pretty sure that they made bolt-action shotguns that were sold by Sears, Monkey Ward, and Western Auto, among others.

Biggest I've ever seen was, I think, a 10-rounder.

A 30-round magazine?

The weight of the shells on the follower would probably be so great that the spring wouldn't be able to lift them.

If the spring was strong enough to lift the shells, it would probably be virtually impossible to load the magazine.

You're supposed to move your head away from the stock right before you pull the trigger, so that the bolt can whiz harmlessly back past your ear.

You might want to tie a string to the bolt handle though, so you can make faster follow-up shots.  Wink
