Road trip
« on: October 22, 2007, 07:51:19 PM »
Just need a destination.  I was all ready for a bonzai run up to northeastern Oregon (1100 miles) to see my brother and get our Mom's ashes settled, but the mountain is already snow covered and inaccessible so it will have to wait until next spring.

Soooooo, I'm all dressed up and no place to go.  Any suggestions for a 7-10 day roundtrip run from central coastal CA?

Northside of the Grand Canyon?

Ozark Mountains, leaves should be turning there in a few weeks. I'm in central Iowa and finally the trees are starting to turn to fall colors.

You can get 7-10 days of crap into a Pious?
 grin
You'll risk some bad weather, but maybe a run through the Grand Canyon, four corners area, Colorado, Utah (specifically the parks like Zion) and back.  You could easily spend a day in each of several very cool places.
Sedona AZ
Grand Canyon
Zion Nat'l park
Arches Nat'l park

Through Utah, down through the mountains of Colorado to Durango, see New Mexico and the Grand Canyon, check out Flagstaff, Sedona, and/or Prescott, and back.

heh. Not taking the Prius, taking something even smaller, my 'yota Echo which gets 40mpg (or did until I put the BFG Traction T/A's on it.)  And hey, what do I need for 7-10 days anyway?  Boots, jeans, clean underwear, warm jacket, a penknife and a bottle of Evian   laugh

You're right about all those places, they are beautifully spectacular.  But, I've been to all of them at least half a dozen times.

I was thinking of NM, haven't been there in awhile.

So will you stop criticizing people who drive larger vehicles, now?  Using a lot of gas needlessly, there.

So, go again.
The one thing I've learned is every time I go somewhere, I wish I had another day or two to explore more.
Drive to Moab, UT on day one.  Spend a few days hiking and biking and screwing off.  Drive home.
Done.
Or, you could drive to VA and say hi.  Then drive home.

Ever been to Capulin Volcano National Monument in North East New Mexico?

Very near the NRA Whittington Center and Telluride, Colorado.

INCREDIBLY beautiful.

It's also the area where I want to move when I retire.

It looks to be quite a distance from Telluride, but my AAA map cuts off at Raton, NM, so I can't be sure.

Now that sounds like down home fun.  But do you talk with a funny accent?  Or is that only folks from SC?

Crap.

Trinidad, Colorado, not Telluride.

Telluride is quite a bit farther west than Raton, and roughly parallel with Colorado Springs.

Trinidad is a quaint little town, certainly not a great tourist destination, but charming.

And, it's right off I-25, same as Raton.

Like hell it is.

It means that it's not been bottled, marketed, recrafted, sanitized, advertised, and pushed like Santa Fe, Taos, or even Telluride.

Late October, 10 days, and you've got a car that gets 40mpg.

Vermont's pretty spiffy this time of year!  Yeah, I know you're in CA right now.  Three days there, three days back, and that leaves you with 4 days to plod around New England.

Which makes it a great tourist destination - at least for me.

Mike, I think Riley hacked your account.

By the way, Riles, get a Sam's Club membership.  Since you'll be wasting gas, you might as well get the best prices.

That sounds really tempting, BUT, I Rand McNally'd SBP to BTV and it's 3100 miles!  No way I can do 1k miles per day. And, if I get that close to Nova Scotia, I need to go there, too (Long story, my family has roots there and a lot of history involving Oak Island and the treasure).

I spent a fall in upstate NY once, and nothing (so far) in the West compares.

Yikes! Mike and I agree on something.  Make peace with your God because Armageddon is near.  shocked

I always try to hit the anti-tourist tourist destinations.

That's why I love Capulin.

It's in the middle of frigging NOWHERE. Very few people at any given time.

The day I was there I shared the volcano with maybe 10 other people.

I paid $3.15 /gal today, anything less than that is a bargain.

In that case, come on out to Missouri.  I think it's about 2.55 right now.   smiley

And, no, that's not the Sam's Club price.
