An irony I have often considered: In the mid/late nineteenth century, a weapon was finally available that could be carried at all times, and could be used by women (even very weak/small/elderly women) to subdue multiple aggressors, and from a safe distance. Even if we take into account the minority of men who would fear reprisal for spousal abuse, it seems very odd that men throughout the Western world did not demand their wives and daughters carry a gun and learn to use it.
I mean, even if you didn't care about 'em, you still wouldn't want anybody else to mess with them.
