https://nypost.com/2019/01/10/ocasio-cortez-passed-over-for-influential-house-committee/
Apparently Ms. Ocasio-Cortez wanted to be on the Ways and Means Committee -- even though freshmen typically aren't named to that committee. She didn't make the cut. I hope she finds herself banished to a few backwater committees that don't affect anything.
-
Poof ! There goes my prediction that they'd put her on either the Rules or the Judiciary Committee.
Drat. Wrong again.
-
Probably being selected for the Committee on Vapid Thought and Silly Ideas. Possibly to head the committee, but I guess they usually don’t select freshman members to head committees, but may make an exception for her.
-
There are other members who are more experienced in vapid thinking, even if they are not as good as she, who could chair the Committee on Vapid Thought and Silly Ideas.
If she were appointed chairperson of something, could we call her the Chairchick?
I don't know. Somehow she reminds me of Kelly Bundy. "Gee, my hair tastes good today !"
-
She's really going full tilt to self-destruct. Now she's dissing Joe Lieberman.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6581851/New-party-dis-Ocasio-Cortez-mocks-aging-Joe-Liberman-hoping-shes-not-future.html
I didn't like Lieberman when he was in office, but I respected him. As for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, she's going to be in for some real-life bitch slapping very soon if she doesn't STFU. You just don't pee on someone who was your party's VP candidate and who served for 24 years in the senate. Her problem is that she seems to believe her press releases.
-
If someone wants to say I'm going on an old guy rant, I'm good with that.
'New party, who dis?'
That's a member of congress. Is this where we are? We're going to be doing rappers and "urban speak" in congress now? I mean, that's straight out of Comacho's administration in Idiocracy.
If that keeps up, congress is going to look like the Jerry Springer show, where you have a bunch of dumbass white suburbanites talking like urban black yutes.
-
She’s so over the top I’ve read speculation that she’s a Trumpster plant to discredit the hard left.
Nobody seems to want to believe the left actually believes what they say and wants to force us by government fiat and violence to obey them.
-
Her teeth remind me of Jimmy Carter....
=D =D =D =D =D
-
I’ve also read that she is doing exactly what Pelosi wants her to do, make Pelosi and Schumer seem “moderate”.
-
Occams razor applies. She was elected by a combination of Bernites and minorities.
https://theintercept.com/2018/07/01/ocasio-cortez-data-suggests-that-gentrifying-neighborhoods-powered-alexandria-ocasio-cortezs-victory-over-the-democratic-establishment/
This portrait of a diverse electorate lifting Ocasio-Cortez to victory contrasts starkly with the prevalent media narrative, which attributes Ocasio-Cortez’s win to demographic factors alone. To myriad pundits, the explanation for her success is simple: The district is increasingly populated by Latinos and other nonwhite voters, and they chose Ocasio-Cortez because they simply did not want a white man like Joe Crowley representing them.
Literally elected by virtue of being a minority woman, with no nod to any accomplishments or credentials.
Stupid people vote for stupid people.

How’s that diversity working out for you former congressman Crowley?

If we're lucky it will start to tear the Democrat party apart. Dissention within the ranks.
However, the GOP is too stupid to seize upon it and solidify.

I also agree with this.
A big problem, and we here contribute to it, is all the press this first term, zero accomplishment person gets. She gets nearly as much media exposure as Trump, while new congressmen like Dan Crenshaw get relatively none.
Obviously from my posts and links here, people know I love getting a good laugh out of Twitchy. However I'd give that up in a heartbeat if Twitter just up and died tomorrow.
It was started with good intentions, and even showed some early on - like getting news reports out of regions of the world where the press was shut down, getting near real time updates during emergencies and disasters, etc. It has now just become a hate platform the brings out the worst in people across the political spectrum, and makes "stars" out of idiots that otherwise would have little or no news coverage. Bronx chick would likely be just another new member of congress if it weren't for the constant social media deluge.

That is an absolute, real, scary, concern. I truly fear that around a half a dozen or so of these new congresscritters, if given a clearance, will treat it as a joke. I can only hope no US citizens or assets die in the name of popular politics and loose lips.

. . . the GOP is too stupid to seize upon it and solidify.
QFT . . . and applicable to many, MANY squandered opportunities in the past.
-
If we're lucky it will start to tear the Democrat party apart. Dissention within the ranks.
However, the GOP is too stupid to seize upon it and solidify.
Republicans are reactionary and conservative, not socially conservative but in maintaining the status quo.
Any proactive plans to take back any ground lost to the Leftists is attacked without mercy by the mainstream media, Democrats, half the Republicans and the entire entertainment establishment, sorry for the redundancy.
The one exception to the above is when economic decisions will help their donors, then change is OK.
Republicans aren’t stupid, they are just weak, subservient and hollow, not willing to ofend leftists even if it requires selling out their voters and being humiliated. The best they can manage is tough talk before they bend over and submit.
The above is a general rule, not written in stone.

The acquisition of that much wealth has bad consequences. A moral society needs guardrails against it
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who remembers a time, about 5 or 10 years ago, when bringing morality into politics was the most horrible, Nazi, Handmaid's Tale thing you could do. Now they want the government to put up "guardrails" against immorality?
Do people really not notice how quickly and completely the Left has flipped from "Get your laws off my body/out of my bedroom" to being the "everything is problematic" morality police?
-

I know a lot of folks roll their eyes when I start ranting about propaganda but honestly this state of affairs didn’t happen accidentally.
The manipulation of the masses was a learned skill back before modern electronic media. You think the understanding and tools are less powerful now?

AOC when asked about Trump's socialism remarks in the State of the Union speech
.@HardballChris asked @AOC about Trump tying the "notion of socialism" to the Maduro regime.
"He feels like he feels himself losing on the issues. Every single policy proposal that we've adopted and presented to the American public has been overwhelmingly popular." @AOC pic.twitter.com/b8zdRuJZ6A

.@AOC: “Even some with a majority of Republican voters supporting what we’re talking about. When we talk about a 70% marginal tax rate on incomes over $10 million, 60% Americans approve it.”

She's in her own little world.
-
You want to tax those who earn over 5 million dollars @70%? I'm opposed to an increase in taxes but here's an idea. When a person reaches an income over 5 million dollars give them a choice. Pay a higher rate of tax on the amount over 5 million or show/prove/document that income is being invested into the economy somehow, be it reinvested in a business or for charitable purposes. That way 100% of whatever that rate might be is not looted by the Federal Government first.

She's telling kids to save the planet by skipping meat and dairy and eating a banana, without apparently realizing that our bazillion tons of bananas are all imported via evil fossil fuels. I read that yesterday with a smile. I like how he said it was hurting taxpayers, and the only way to help the taxpayers was to further tax the taxpayers.
Though I did see that he said some blurb about, "I guess if you keep taxing the rich more and more, the rich will leave." Of course I think he was blaming Trump for that, not the fact that property taxes are so high there, nor all the social programs that were counting on those dollars. Kind of a, "Trump caused the rich to see how much we were taxing them at the state level."
Edit: WLJ got in the "Trump's fault" while I was typing.

I would be curious to see the income of billionaires in this country and see what their actual annual income is. People always forget that income does not necessarily equal wealth and wealthy people can always reorganize to make their income whatever they need it to be.

She died before gaining U.S. citizenship, so she made no pretense of being "American," even though her native country is in South America. And she absolutely refused to consider herself "Hispanic." Or we could make everyone, regardless of type or amount of income, pay the same rate. At flat 15% for every dollar earned in any way is probably enough to cover the budget.

Agreed, and I've always thought that 15 percent might be the right number. I think there might be some "floor" beneath which income isn't taxed at all, but that should be low -- like around the poverty level. Maybe the first $20,000 or $25,000 isn't taxed, and all income above that is taxed at the same rate.
-
Or here's a novel idea. Eliminate the 16th amendment, let the states levy taxes as they will, and shrink the size of the federal government back down.
The 16th is the amendment that killed federalism.

It probably wouldn’t surprise many of you here to know I read/have read a lot from what is called the alt-right and neo-reactionary alternative “media”.
I ran across this take on AOC and just have to share.
http://www.amerika.org/politics/aoc/
Just to make it clear, this guy is a nihilist and his prescriptions do not represent my views on all the current issues of the day in any way. While I’m cynical and skeptical about much I find life bursting at the seams with meaning.
His analysis of AOC resonates with me.
I do believe she has the similar gift/skill that Trump has and we shouldn’t right her off as crazy, nutty, dumb etc.
It could be all hokum also, but Trump becoming President and his odd effectiveness after such an unlikely win has forced me to think outside the box about a bunch of stuff.
Remember, she’s not trying to convince us, she has a target audience she is trying to persuade.

She's also the champion of an ignorant generation.
-
I do believe she has the similar gift/skill that Trump has and we shouldn’t right her off as crazy, nutty, dumb etc.
Remember, she’s not trying to convince us, she has a target audience she is trying to persuade.
Jonah Goldberg had a very similar take in NRO awhile back. I think it's pretty accurate.
In other words, AOC is quite brilliantly playing a lot of people for suckers. She already has more Twitter followers than the other 60 incoming freshman Democrats combined.
Ocasio-Cortez, wittingly or not, has appropriated a technique mastered by President Trump.
Trump prefers positive attention, but he’ll take negative attention over no attention every time, in part because he knows his supporters will intensify their dedication to him in response to allegedly unfair attacks. AOC is doing the same thing. By forcing partisans to take sides, she generates controversy. Controversy attracts media attention. Media attention generates even more controversy. And so on.
As with Trump, sometimes she clearly knows what she’s doing, and other times she simply displays her ignorance. But at this stage, it doesn’t matter. The more right-wing partisans attack her, the more left-wing partisans rally to her. The more left-wingers rally to her, the more justified the Right feels in paying attention to her.
She's building a brand and at this stage, any attention is going to help her.

I'm not sure I'd call it "brilliant". Her twitter following is an echo chamber. She is surrounded by people who prop her stupidity up.
But it's not to be underestimated.

I remember reading an op-ed I think it was by and not about Obama and pretty sure it was before he was elected senator or just after. My takeaway was crap, they're going to make him president. And they did.

Indeed. Trump is Trump and will change when circumstances dictate it is advantageous to do so. She really, truly believes her commie stuff. Though it has been interesting watching the backpedaling and blaming the conservatives on the green deal thing. As I read somewhere else, it sounded like something a bunch of high schoolers put together and somehow thought the adults would take seriously. That seems to be true of most everything I have seen from her as of yet.

So has anyone heard what their "Final Solution" for farting cows is suppose to be?
Only things I can come up with are
A: Install cow fart filters on every cow
B: Pass a law making cows farts illegal
C: Employ the Nazi "Final Solution" model

I don’t know if you’ve seen some of the other articles concerning this but essentially they want to run ranchers out of business by taxing meat at a prohibitively high rate to reduce consumption in the name of “climate change” and “public health”
Side effects of malnutrition and starvation because of removing affordable sources of protein is of course just a bonus for the *expletive deleted*ing whack jobs of course. Just breaking eggs to make the omelette so to speak

The hilarious part is all of those ideas to end meat treat "farmland" as an interchangeable square in a sim game. Just grow vegetables! Well, good luck. My area is not stable for row crop. At all. Makes lots of sheep and cow though. Same with much of the west. Might take 40 acres of range to support one beef, but what else is the land gonna do? On the hippie flip side, I am totally okay with exploring alternative protein source. A cricket based hot dog is going to be way cleaner than a chicken one.

My head hurts
Not sure how many pundits talking about Amazon even read the deal or where it was going.
$500+ million of the deal was *capital grants.*
$2.5 billion in tax breaks.
It’s fair to ask why we don’t invest the capital for public use, + why we don’t give working people a tax break. https://t.co/jUqaugUHYP
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 19, 2019
Frankly, the knee-jerk reaction assuming that I “don’t understand” how tax giveaways to corps work is disappointing.
No, it’s not possible that I could come to a different conclusion. The debate *must* be over my intelligence & understanding, instead of the merits of the deal.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 19, 2019
There’s NO WAY that this deal – one of the biggest giveaways in state history – could possibly have been bad, right?
Surely there can’t be anything wrong with suddenly announcing a massive restructuring & pricing out of a community without any advance notice or input from them.

Too true. It's not as if she had to look at company income vs. expenses to figure out how to pay those salaries and still pay the rent and the electric company. I don't know how congressional offices work, but I assume each representative gets 'X' dollars per year for staffing, so raising the salaries probably amounts to hiring a couple fewer staffers and spreading the unused money from those slots among the others.
I wonder if her boyfriend (excuse me, "partner") is listed as a staff member. Apparently she gave him a .gov e-mail address.

She's the boss
Talking about how she tried to overcome her insecurities, she said, “I’m at least trying, and they’re not. And so the power is in the person who’s trying, regardless of the success.
“If you’re trying, you’ve got all the power, you’re driving the agenda, you’re doing all this stuff,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Like, I just introduced the Green New Deal two weeks ago, and it’s creating all of this conversation. Why? Because no one else has even tried,” she declared, in an apparent snub to Barack Obama’s Paris accord.
[…]
“Some people are like, ‘Oh, it’s unrealistic, oh, it’s vague, oh, it doesn’t address this minute little thing, and I’m like, you try! You do it! ‘Cause you’re not! ‘Cause you’re not! So, until you do it, I’m the boss!

From AOC's FAQ:
We set a goal to get to net-zero rather than zero emissions, in ten years because we aren't sure that we'll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast, but we think we can ramp up renewable manufacturing and power production, retrofit every building in America, build the smart grid, overhaul transportation and agriculture, plant lots of trees and restore our ecosystem to get to net-zero.
What the heck does "net-zero" mean? Is she latching onto Al Gore's "carbon credits" idiocy? The concept of "net-zero" as opposed to zero obviously suggests some sort of tradeoff for some aspects that aren't capable of achieving true zero. But does that mean that some things need to achieve negative emissions? Is she contemplating machines or equipment that will suck greenhouse gasses out of the "ecosystem" and convert them into something unbad?
She claims to have a plan. I haven't seen any hint of a plan -- just a bunch of pie-in-the-sky ranting about accomplishing in ten years something that can't realistically be done in a hundred years. Case in point: I live in a 69-year old house that uses oil for heat and costs about $500 a month during the heating season. I would have to look up how many gallons of heating oil that translates to, but as an order of magnitude I'd guess between 1,500 and 2,000 gallons per year. I want to know what her plan is to retrofit my house to achieve zero use of fossil fuel. And who is going to pay for it, since I can't.
-

Net zero:
https://www.worldgbc.org/advancing-net-zero/what-net-zero
Note:
WorldGBC recognises that in most situations, net zero energy buildings, i.e. buildings that generate 100% of their energy needs on-site, are not feasible. Therefore, buildings that are energy efficient, and supply energy needs from renewable sources (on-site and/or off-site) is a more appropriate target for the mass scale required to achieve Paris Agreement levels of global emission reductions.
-
Wasn't Net-Zero a FREE internet company?
-
Hawk,
That's easy. Your 70 YO house along with a few more around yours the same age, or not, get bulldozed & they put up passive solar , 5 story "project" that won't work. Oh & you get one of the 600 square foot apartments, cause that's all you need.
-
Also, for residential building, many are using "goal zero" instead of "net zero", I assume because of the caveat in my link above. An example:
https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/89244774_zpid/43.5761,-116.423579,43.496705,-116.571208_rect/12_zm/
The above home is goal zero (according to the builder, though the realtor ad says "net") plus is one of the "sealed designs" so you always have an air circulator/filter running vs ever opening windows (the windows are like 5" thick).
I'm actually not at all opposed to goal zero as long as it's not by force of government. My major opposition to the technology is that it's still over priced, IMO. If you go to the history on that house, you can see that it started out at $1million. Though its current selling price is now in line with standard homes in that area.
-
Net zero:
https://www.worldgbc.org/advancing-net-zero/what-net-zero
Note:
According to the WGBC timeline, 2050 is the goal for all buildings to be "net-zero." That's thirty years out, not the ten years AOC is calling for. As an architect and licensed building inspector, I'm pretty certain that it can't happen even by 2050.
-
Also, for residential building, many are using "goal zero" instead of "net zero", I assume because of the caveat in my link above. An example:

-
That is a nice house and garage. I'd live in it.
It's very nice, top notch construction, and in a nice area as well. I looked at it last year when it was still overpriced.
Which is also kind of a point for me posting the link. It's a great example of "supply and demand" in the alternative energy market. It's currently around 10-15% higher than comparable places in the area. That's acceptable to me for $100 per YEAR utility bills, or maybe even getting paid for the excess electricity produced.
The original $1million asking price though, is analogous to what AOC and the greenies want. They want to force us into that tech for the $1million price tag, when it's only worth half that. Another reason that the green deal would absolutely bankrupt the US.

Two political action committees founded by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s top aide funneled over $1 million in political donations into two of his own private companies, according to a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday.
Campaign finance attorneys described the arrangement as “really weird” and an indication "there’s something amiss." They said there was no way of telling where the political donations went — meaning they could have been pocketed or used by the company to pay for off-the-books campaign operations.

Now she's mad because the grocery store "gives her 10 paper bags" when she checks out. I hate the nagging greenies, but even I usually take my own bag to the store. When I don't it's because I want the bags because I'll reuse them for other stuff. She, on the other hand, is upset because it's too hard to recycle them (vs reusing them).
Perfect example of the type of "environmentalist" who does it for the attention vs actually for the environment.

At this point, I think she just makes a useful distraction. Pelosi can use her to voice all the radical ideas and make her look reasonable.

Don’t live in a right wing bubble.
She is very popular on the left/far left.
She may be bringing the same game that Trump used.
Trump was pretty far out there himself, he was the number one Obama birth certificate birther if you recall.
Trump tailors his message to the audience. When he was meeting with Putin I doubt he was ranting like he does at CPAC.
Comrade Sandy O is playing to a specific demographic.
She will smooth ruffled feathers once her base is secured.
Or she is on our side and was sent to destroy the Dems! :)
-
AOC may be popular on the far left, but she is still an ignorant loud mouthed nut. Even some of her senior liberal travelers have chastised her. A Greenpeace member recently condemned her environmental plan.
She's no Trump. Trump has a real estate empire. Cortez was a bartender. Slight difference, there.

Honestly, I know folks on the left who are successful and reasonably smart who think she is great.
She is moving the Overton window not only for the Dems but within the country. She has much better optics than Bernie.
I agree with you for the most part TommyGunn, she’s a nutter and seems like a loose cannon.
Although I dont think it is wise to dismiss her quite yet.

AOC and Trump may have some similarity in style, but Trump hasn't pushed the Republican Party to the right the way AOC pushes to the left. Of course, the popular mythology is that Trump is "far-right," but that's just the same alarmism they push about Romney, and Bush, and every other Republican.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ocasio-cortezs-millionaire-chief-of-staff-violated-fec-rules-to-hide-885g-fec-complaint-alleges
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Saikat Chakrabarti, the progressive firebrand's multimillionaire chief of staff, apparently violated campaign finance law by funneling nearly $1 million in contributions from political action committees Chakrabarti established to private companies that he also controlled, according to an explosive complaint filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and obtained by Fox News.
Amid the allegations, a former FEC commissioner late Monday suggested in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation that Ocasio-Cortez and her team could separately be facing major fines and potentially even jail time if they were knowingly and willfully violating the law by hiding their control of the Justice Democrats political action committee (PAC). Such an arrangement could have allowed Ocasio-Cortez's campaign to receive donations in excess of the normal limit, by pooling contributions to both the PAC and the campaign itself.
Might be a big nothingburger. Might be a bit more.
-
I, for one, eagerly await the "standard" televised, pre-dawn SWAT raid on Mr. Chakrabarti's home. Process criminals are the most dangerous kind.

I agree she is playing to the Democrat liberal base. I have also heard it said that this far ahead of the Presidential election, playing to the base is how to stand out from the crowd and get early support. We will see if she can maintain that into next year.

AOC coming to Kentucky to meet coal miners. And of course the C&J is having an orgasm
A rising Democratic star in Congress who has been called the "Wonder Woman of the left, Wicked Witch of the right"could be coming to a Kentucky coal mine near you.
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of New York, has been spearheading a grand environmental legislative package dubbed the Green New Deal to tackle climate change.
The progressive plan looks to combine using renewable energy resources and economic stimulus measures. But it is being branded by conservative leaders — namely Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. — as a socialist takeover of the American economy.

Bernie's on board with the USPS idea
Because banks are racist
Banks make record profits discriminating against people of color and denying basic banking services to 63 million adults who are unbanked or underbanked.
We must allow every post office to offer basic, affordable banking services and end lending discrimination once and for all.

First major legislative proposal from Rep. @AOC, calling for 15% cap on credit card interest rates, gets backing from 2020 presidential hopeful https://t.co/l7AcOYLEp0

So you're okay with the government interfering in free market economics, financials, and liberty?
-
So you're okay with the government interfering in free market economics, financials, and liberty?
I should have explained more fully.
I mean I agree that some credit card companies charge ridiculously obscene high interest rates and it's those rates often make it hard for people to climb out of a debt hole. That's the surface of the idea I somewhat agree with but at the same time I am leary of govt control of anything like this thus the devil in the details.
The heart of the problem is far that too many people spend way beyond their means and they've made it far too easy these people to walk away from their debt while the rest of us pick up the tab.
Surface: The idea that maybe some interest rates may be too high
The details: There's a very good reason why some of these rates are so high
I don't have enough coffee in me yet to be clear
-
The heart of the problem is far that too many people spend way beyond their means and they've made it far too easy these people to walk away from their debt while the rest of us pick up the tab.
Indeed, which is why I'd rather have a free market solution (that doesn't involve people walking away from self-incurred debt). Credit card interest is very much supply and demand. If less people carried ginormous balances on their cards, the CC companies would lower interest rates to get more people to carry some debt.
Much like how auto companies offer 0% financing to sell their cars. If people would be standing in line to buy cars, they'd also be paying 10% financing. CC companies seem to have no shortage of people willing to pay 20% interest so they can just pay $25/mo on $10000 debt, or at least people who don't read their contracts regarding interest charges.
-
Check cashing places and pay loan people charge quite a bit also, but people still keep going back to those places. No law will make up for people being foolish with their money.
-
Check cashing places and pay loan people charge quite a bit also, but people still keep going back to those places. No law will make up for people being foolish with their money.
A lot of people use those places because they don't trust banks, and/or banks don't offer short term (or long term) loans because of their lack of credit/ability to pay. The PayDay loan places fill then need of those people, and given their BK/default rates, is why they charge outrageous rates.
But when the car breaks and you need it to get to work to pay the rent/buy groceries, you need money to get it fixed.
-
Add "market forces" to the list of things AOC has never heard of.
-
Check cashing places and pay loan people charge quite a bit also, but people still keep going back to those places. No law will make up for people being foolish with their money.
One of my employers, over the years, got into rent to own. He loved it, even with the headaches. If the renter/buyer ever managed to pay off the item, he'd have paid either 2 or 4 (I forget which) times what it was worth.
One of my current customers is a low end used car dealer. If you're on my Book of Faces you'll have seen an occasional rant from my dealing with them. They kind of place where if you don't make weekly payments they repo the vehicle. In the main location there are more people in collections, than sales.
Yes, it sucks to be on the consumer side of this.
-
Company I used to work for used to build and refurb PCs for a RTO chain. We were building the PCs for roughly $500. Once in while when one came in for refurb the RTO paperwork would be in the box. To actually own the $500 PC from the RTO chain the customer would wind up paying over $3,000 over 2 or maybe 3 years, fuzzy memory on the time.
-
I understand the hot new ticket these days in car repossession is a GPS remote disabling device such that if you miss a payment, the car shuts down and sends a signal of the location to make it easy for the dealer to come get it.
-
So you're okay with the government interfering in free market economics, financials, and liberty?
Yes
Only in the libertarian utopia that never existed and never will does government not interfere in those areas.
Libertarians and conservatives have been getting butt raped by the left due to the slavish devotion to unrealistic principles that only would work in a utopia with better humans.
I say this with all due respect guys, I was a long time libertarian. I voted for Ron Paul when he ran on the big L ticket against Bush.
Libertarianism is leftist and suicidal in a global economy.
Nationalism and federalism will make us stronger on the world stage.

Credit is a pretty basic thing. People who are too stupid to participate correctly in the economy pay a higher price for credit.
Excessive government interference in consumer credit rates will not produce the intended result.
-
Agreed. Excessive being the key word.
But I think Ron is right in that some Govt is needed to set boundaries and enforce that.

AOC from the interview:
“What I love too is growing plants that are culturally familiar to the community. It’s so important,” she said as she filmed a community garden in the Bronx.
“So that’s really how you do it right. That is such a core component of the Green New Deal is having all of these projects make sense in a cultural context, and it’s an area that we get the most pushback on because people say, ‘Why do you need to do that? That’s too hard.’”
You know, the more I hear from her the more I think she has no clue at all about real life. Little details seem to escape her notice, such as the fact that as far back as we know people grew crops for food instead of merely a cultural experiment.
-
I just realized I'm missing out on the fortune that I could be making. I can embrace the Green New Deal and get the concession to sell her all the Brawndo those gardens need. The commercial has already been recorded.
-
Alright, I listened to the colonizing cauliflower video. And composting is, like, hard. And stuff. I have laughed along with most reports on her while still realizing that given sufficient power she would be right at home administering coup de grace when we're rounded up.
But until now I never listened to her. Her speech patterns are not those of an intelligent person. My God she is dumb. Stupid on Amazon's part, IMO. Of course they're libs, so what do you expect?
The smart move (again, IMO) would have been to just go to any of the other cities on their list that wanted them, and if Amazon does for whatever reason really, really want something in NY or NYC, bide their time and let NY come begging.

Follow up. Yet to be verified report says that she started going off on CBP officers and never actually made it inside the facility to witness the toilet drinking.

I don't know what kind of facility it was that AOC did or didn't tour but, if it actually has cells, each cell that has a toilet also has a faucet from which "residents" can drink. Penal facility toilets are always stainless steel, one-piece, integrated toilet/sink fixtures.

Very good point. It would be interesting to see if that's how the facility was setup. They seem to be calling it "detention facility", which in MSMspeak, could mean anything.

Well, a few years ago I did a Citizens' Police Academy with the PD in the adjacent town. Series of 2-hour classes, one night a week, at which various officers explained how the department handles different functions. I even leaned how to lift fingerprints. We toured the station house, and even the holding cells in a small town police department had those combination sink/toilet units.
It wouldn't surprise me if the people were in cells -- if it's a "detention" facility that's all they have to offer. BUT ... when AOC tweets about "refugees" being kept in cells, the image you get is that they're locked up. I'll bet the cell doors weren't locked, or even closed.
-
Shampoo is so scarce, the "inmates" are slipping it to AOC to sneak out of the facility and show the world.
That looks like a shampoo and/or bodywash packet similar to what I've had in many budget hotels. But I guess that would be torture for someone who needs $20 lipstick. Also, is she implying women's hair is falling out from not being washed? That means there should be around a billion third world women walking around bald.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7201939/Border-patrol-agents-shared-Photoshopped-images-AOC-performing-oral-sex-secret-Facebook-group.html
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I don't think it's possible for the toilet in one of those combo units to have water and the faucet (and drinking fountain, if they have one) to not have water. The whole thing is fed from a single inlet pipe. Either everything has water, or nothing has water.
A second member of Congress claimed in an online video that a single detainee in El Paso had told her she was advised to drink toilet water.
'One woman said that the border patrol agent told her to - if she wanted water, just to drink from the toilet, California Democratic Rep. Judy Chu said.
I wonder if this is just a case of a failure to communicate. A BP agent may have been asked for a glass of water and told this one detainee that she could get water from the tap attached to the toilet unit. If the detainee didn't speak English and that particular BP agent didn't speak Spanish (or didn't speak it fluently), it's very possible that the detainee misinterpreted what she was told.
I'll still bet the cell doors are left wide open and unlocked. Something I read said these detainees were recently moved into the detention center from living in tents. Well, my goodness gracious -- it's the southwest United States, and it's July. Tents must have been like ovens. I suspect they were moved into the detention center so they could be in a climate-controlled environment.

Just left the 1st CBP facility.
I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me.
Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets.
This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress.

They were literally discussing making a GoFundMe for an officer who attacked my on my tour.
They confiscated my phone, and they were all armed. I’m 5’4”.
They’re just upset I exposed their inhumane behavior.

I don't disagree with her (on this topic). I never understood the "need" for a Department of Homeland Security. But she also used the word "reorganization," and I think that's appropriate. There was a Customs and Immigration department pre-DHS. There was a Border Patrol pre-DHS. There was a Coast Guard pre-DHS. These agencies were all moved into DHS by -- reorganization. So it shouldn't be rocket science to move those agencies back where they came from while disbanding the DHS and abolishing the TSA -- and maybe dumping the BATFE in the process.

Chakrabarti had an unexpected disclosure. “The interesting thing about the Green New Deal,” he said, “is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all.” Ricketts greeted this startling notion with an attentive poker face. “Do you guys think of it as a climate thing?” Chakrabarti continued. “Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.”

Has a sitting US Rep ever called for riots in the US before?
During an interview with New York's Hot 97 earlier this week, Ocasio-Cortez argued "marginalized" communities have no choice but to riot against their so-called oppressors.
"I believe injustice is a threat to the safety of all people. Because once you have a group that is marginalized and marginalize and marginalized...once someone doesn't have access to clean water, they have no choice but to riot. And it doesn't have to be that way. I'm not even taking about Palestinians. I'm talking about communities in poverty in the United States; I'm talking about Latin America; I'm talking about all over the world," she said.
Two weeks ago Ocasio-Cortez was asked if she condemns the violent domestic terror attack carried out by an Antifa member at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Center in Tacoma, Washington. She refused to give an answer.

If you, if we study our history, which, we’re supposed to study our history, especially as elected officials, I think we have a unique responsibility to study history. And what we see is concentration camps are not unique to any one period of time. We, in the United States, have a history of concentration camps with Japanese interment, in South Africa. They were part of a larger process in the Holocaust, but they were not unique, nor were they the actual death camps in the Holocaust either.
Lemme get this straight: The United States ran concentration camps for Japanese in South Africa, and that was part of the Holocaust.
REEEEEEALY? And you're telling me that I need to study history?

I want to see one from AOC about the electoral collage.
-
One thing I was thinking about is that pretty much all these "eliminate the electoral college" imbeciles happen to also be pro-UN. How does the UN vote again? Oh yeah - one state, one vote. Andorra (pop 76,000) gets the same consideration as the US.
And actually, I'd be fine with elimination of the Electoral College if we went to the system a confederated Republic should be: One person, one vote in the states, and one state, one vote for federal elections.
-

I would consider doing some sort of electoral college in the states by county. Congressional districts are too gerrymandered to make that work.
-
I would consider doing some sort of electoral college in the states by county. Congressional districts are too gerrymandered to make that work.
I'd be in favor of that with our current electoral system, to moderate the undo influence of urban regions on a state's electoral votes. I don't think it would be necessary if we had a "one state, one vote" system, because that would eliminate the electoral influence of say, CA - or TX for that matter.
-
How much influence should urban areas have? Do they deserve any? What about suburbs, do they require re-balancing?
Is there an exact ratio or percentage for how much an urban vote should count vs a rural vote?
-
How much influence should urban areas have? Do they deserve any?
They have most of the influence in the electoral system. How much more do you think they should have?
They, in CA, for example, pretty much dictate where CA's 55 electoral votes go. In a "one person/one vote for state, and one state one vote federal" system, they can keep defining the politics of individual states without unduly penalizing other states with their bajillion electoral votes.
In a confederation, why should one state have more influence than another just because it has more people? Each state should have equal influence on the federal level.
-
How much influence should urban areas have? Do they deserve any? What about suburbs, do they require re-balancing?
Is there an exact ratio or percentage for how much an urban vote should count vs a rural vote?
No, and I very much doubt there is some way to mathematically quantify a metric.
However, I think distance from the urban area (that dominates the state) ought to be considered in value of the vote.
A down-state Illinois resident, for example, lives FAR closer to Memphis or Nashville (that are two states away!) than to Chicago and has almost no say in what occurs in his state. The problem is that urban areas are dictating the policies of an entire state that has concerns far afield of the cloistered views of urbanites.
It was part of the genius of the founders that they realized a large state could quickly overwhelm the concerns of many smaller states that differ or even conflict with the interests of the larger state.
It is part of the blindness of their founders that most states didn't attempt to address this weakness within the states, as well.
-
We need less "unity" not more.
Power needs to be devolved down to the closest level to locally as is practical.
Otherwise I see civil war in the future, I know it's counterintuitive but large swaths of Americans of every race and ethnicity feel somewhat disenfranchised.
Diversity isn't our strength but an obstacle to overcome.
People need to feel like they have skin in the game and have real investment in their "neighborhood" otherwise it becomes tragedy of the commons writ large.
-
They have most of the influence in the electoral system. How much more do you think they should have?
They should have proportional influence to their population when electing someone.
I believe that in any given election, 1 person = 1 vote is the best option.
This is because our elections are basic winner-take-all situtations where one person takes office and the loser(s) get nothing.
There is no protection for the minority in an election, it's simple majority rule.
Minority protections are best done through the power structure & rules of the government (filibuster!), not the elections to fill those positions within the government.
In a confederation, why should one state have more influence than another just because it has more people?
Should a state with 1000 people have equal influence as a state with a 1000000 people? At some point it becomes untenable.
The problem is that urban areas are dictating the policies of an entire state that has concerns far afield of the cloistered views of urbanites.
This is the real problem that everyone seems to be trying to "fix", government exerting too much control over people.
Tinkering with vote values so the minority exerts that same control isn't the way to fix that.
Power needs to be devolved down to the closest level to locally as is practical.
This is the correct solution.
-
Should a state with 1000 people have equal influence as a state with a 1000000 people? At some point it becomes untenable.
It's not untenable in a Republic. As I mentioned, even the UN works this way.
"Simple majority rule" on the federal level = places like Greece. No thanks.
Doesn't anyone read the Federalist Papers anymore?

You really believe that no matter how far off those balances are, people would just put up with a minority overruling them?
A republic is a good system but it's not magic and the UN is a joke, regularly ignored. Not something we need to try to emulate.
-

What minority? The balances are off now if you're looking at a popular vote on the federal level vs state, but you seem fine with tossing the electoral college for them and controlling 45 states via the populations of five. Are you sure you're not a Bulwark writer?
Tyranny of the masses.
-
What minority?
The minority of people who voted.
When it comes to elected positions, I believe people should vote. Not states, not electors, not counties, not regions, not districts. Each person gets to vote for 1 person to fill that position representing you and all votes should be counted equally. There is no reason for an extra layer of abstraction between the person voting and the outcome of an election. I see no need for my vote to be weighted more or less than anyone else's. There is no need for it to be aggregated at any level. I vote directly for my alderperson, my mayor, my county board member, my governor, my state representatives, my federal representatives, etc. The same system would work fine for president. I see no reason to give more power to the state when it can reside with the individual.
Are you sure you're not a Bulwark writer?
Is this supposed to be slight? ??? Are they notoriously anti electoral college?
Tyranny of the masses.
We're talking one position within the government and it's being decided by one election. Removing the electoral college doesn't make it tyranny. ;/
It doesn't destroy all of the safeguards built into our system of government.
Edit: I found this interesting article at the Bulwark about what would change if we switched to a popular vote.
https://thebulwark.com/what-if-we-did-have-a-popular-vote-for-president/
I swear I didn't write it! :P

We've already tinkered with one of the safeguards created by the Founders. With the way states have become so polarized it might not make any practical difference today but, originally, congressional representatives were to be elected by popular vote but senators were to be elected by the respective state legislatures. Essentially, as a sort of balance of power, representatives were supposed to represent the people and senators were supposed to represent the states.
And then somebody decided that senators should also be elected by popular vote.

You have your popular vote at the state level. You get to, by a majority, elect someone(s) to represent you and your state's interest at the federal level along with every other state in the confederation. If the confederated states in a Republic aren't treated individually and equally, what's the point?
Then we might as well be one big country with no states or state boundaries, and we can all live under the same gun control laws, or abortion laws, or any other contentious issues that states vehemently disagree on, based on how the majority of the country votes in geographically concentrated population centers.
-

I didn't start this tinkering discussion, but people asked my opinion so I answered even though I've been over it before.
I was just curious about how much more tinkering we apparently need to counteract those urban voters. I guess maybe there isn't a precise amount, gotta go by feel.

Changing who votes on the president from the EC to individuals doesn't suddenly make states disappear or the president all-powerful.
The president would have the exact same powers he had before. There would still be different branches of government with different powers.
The division of powers and structure of the government (which is what protects against tyranny) isn't changing by having a popular vote for that position.
It wouldn't even necessarily change who wins.
-
Electing the President by purely popular vote disenfranchises most of the country known as "flyover country" from ever having a say in presidential elections ever again. With a permanent Democrat presidency there would never be another Republican bill passed into law.
It may very well be the stupidest and most destructive change to the way we are governed that has ever been suggested.
If you want to accelerate reaching the end of the republic you couldn't come up with a better idea.
-

Being in the minority is not the same as being disenfranchised.

If you are in a permanent minority, as would develop with the elimination of the EC, then you would be disenfranchised for all practical purposes.

The economy would be *expletive deleted*ed, the justice system would be really *expletive deleted*ed(beyond the *expletive deleted*ed it is now), taxes would be sky *expletive deleted*ing high, crime would be insanely high, etc. do you think San Francisco, NYC, LA, Chicago’s issues becoming the default for the nation would be a good idea?
-

Does that mean all the people in deep red states who vote blue and vice versa are disenfranchised ? I don't think so.
Are green party or libertarian voters disenfranchised because their candidates don't even get on the ballot everywhere? I still don't think so, but you'd have a better argument there.
Words have meaning. Being disenfranchised does not mean "not getting what you want".
And besides that, I still don't believe it would mean permanent Democrat presidency.

Your theories about what would happen have been tried in the laboratories of the states.
California and Illinois are a great object lesson in leftist rule.
In Illinois I'm effectively without representation, Chicago dominates the state.
Why do you hate America? (said only half joking)
-

Exactly an object lesson in why a representative republic is so important. It sucks to have to uproot and move if you're not represented in your state any longer. I was essentially without representation in my old state of CA. I at least had the option to move to Idaho where I can live with like minded people and again have representation for things that are important to me.
With the popular vote within states, each state can decide how they want to be run. US citizens within those states at least have options of moving if they no longer feel their state represents them. If the entire US no longer represents you, you're only option is ex-pating.
CA absolutely was the state that put Hillary Clinton over the top in the popular vote. The voting population of one state would have made her president, even though 40% of Californians voted for someone else.
-
Why do you hate America? (said only half joking)
Ya know, when I first asked about what percentage an urban vote should count for a rural vote I considered making a 3/5ths joke.
But I saw no need to ruffle feathers with a joke that people would probably be quite sensitive about.
I decided to keep things polite and not be offensive and will continue to do so
Exactly an object lesson in why a representative republic is so important.
And to be clear, would having a popular vote for president turn us into something other than a representative republic?

What is the good that would come from changing how we elect the President?

Everyone gets an equal say, it's a better and fairer system for electing someone who ostensibly represents everyone. That's all.
It's not some grand scheme to reconfigure the entire government or destroy America.

Your suicidal commitment to radical egalitarianism is breathtakingly myopic.
That's about the nicest thing I can say.
-
And to be clear, would having a popular vote for president turn us into something other than a representative republic?
Yes. The whole point of a representative republic is to represent everyone - not just the majority. I'm unsure why that is so difficult to understand.
What presidential candidate, who wants to win the popular vote, would spend even a minute of their time campaigning in any state with under 7 million people? They can just concentrate on sucking up to the top fifteen by population.

Because fairness or something.
-
Yes.
Wrong
Show me what definition of a representative republic you're using that no longer applies if the president is elected by popular vote instead of electors.
We still have the split state/federal governments, we still make laws through elected representatives, we still have different branches of government. It would still be a representative republic.

And we would never have a republican, let alone conservative in the white house again. Imagine the damage that could do to the make up of the Supreme court.
It would also take a constitutional amendment to change things properly.
-
It would also take a constitutional amendment to change things properly.
Absolutely, and a constitutional amendment is not going to happen. It's all theoretical unless that interstate compact happens which isn't likely either (and I don't support anyway).
Yet we obviously can't have a discussion about the merits of a system without people going nuts about permanent liberal overlords and accusations of treason. ;/
-
Another thing that the EC accomplishes is it compartmentalizes recounts. Remember the Florida recount in... I think it was 2000? Imagine what would happen if a national popular-vote resulted in a tie :O The recount and the challenges and the re-recounts would take forever.

No, you're wrong. Several people have already explained this to you. When you can potentially ignore over 80% of population distributions geographically, you're not a representative republic. Or at least you're a lousy example of one.
Hillary Clinton won 51% of the popular vote by winning only 100 counties nationally. 100 out 3000. That was pretty much CA, TX, FL, and NY.
It has nothing to do with "people going nuts over liberal overlords". Those are your words, so save the rolly eyes for yourself. It's a crappy idea regardless of political party.
-

Why does the geographical population distribution matter more than the actual voting population?
I'm the same person whether I live in Montana or New York, why should my vote for the same office count differently if I move?
It has nothing to do with "people going nuts over liberal overlords". Those are your words, so save the rolly eyes for yourself.
Excuse me for paraphrasing but it was brought up by a few other people...
With a permanent Democrat presidency there would never be another Republican bill passed into law.

People seem to be totally incapable of separating out how something that might hurt their political party might also be a fairer system.
A good system can produce a bad outcome. Our current system, which everyone else here seems to prefer, has produced some bad outcomes (Obama?).
It doesn't mean it's a bad system, but there might be better systems and there might be fairer systems.
I've been talking about fairness, everyone else keeps obsessing over the political ramifications.
It's a crappy idea regardless of political party
If that's true, why do people keep bringing up political parties in their arguments against it?
-
Why does the geographical population distribution matter more than the actual voting population?
I'm the same person whether I live in Montana or New York, why should my vote for the same office count differently if I move?
You ought to know the answer to that. It requires candidates to compete for votes from multiple and heterogeneous regions. While the system has changed somewhat since the Framers' day, they understood the need to give smaller states some counterbalance against the larger states. That it also protects more rational hinterlanders against the depravity of the coasts is a bonus.
-
You're concept of fairness is actually tyranny of the majority.
We are not supposed to be a Democracy.
There is nothing fair about large metropolitan areas ruling the country with an iron fist.
Your faulty concept of fairness will actually have the opposite effect and become the vehicle of injustice.
It's almost as if you want to fundmentally transform the USA into something different.
-

Federalist #10 actually goes into that regarding "factions".
This is starting to go circular, so I don't want to keep typing basically the same thing over and over again, and I'm sure you don't either. Last word, as far as any debate with me on the subject, is yours if you want it. :)

Yeah, it was just a fictional book/movie series but wasn't that pretty much the premise of The Hunger Games?
At one time 1984 was "just fiction".

I agree, this has gone circular and I'm pretty much done with it. My best guess is that maybe my regional identity just isn't as strong as others here so I don't see the need to vote at that level rather than the individual level. Counties, states, congressional districts, etc., are arbitrary entities that exist for limited purpose - they shouldn't have voting power in an election that could belong to the individual. I don't think my region or state is important enough, or so unique in our viewpoint that it needs extra voting power compared to it's population. If it was that great then people would vote with their feet and move. I think the fundamental disagreement lies somewhere in there, but it's hard for me to pinpoint.
I still think that it's absurd hyperbole to claim that changing who votes on one elected position within the entire government without changing any of the fundamental structure is a change in the type of government and is a direct path to tyranny.
And I'm still not sure what to make of that Bulwark comment.
-

... have you read the Federalist papers?
Honestly, these aren't new arguments we're dealing with.
Further, these United States agreed to a structure within the government that preserved the concerns of the separate states. "Just changing how they vote" is not some minor issue, and we'd have never had a Union had your naive views allowed Massachusetts and Virginia to run roughshod over the rest of the states.
-

When referenced here or elsewhere I have, and as a result I would venture to guess I've read them more than the average voter.

No argument with that.

I never said it was a minor issue, clearly it gets a lot of people riled up and would take a constitutional amendment to change.
What I did say is that it wouldn't be a change in the fundamental structure/type of our government.
Would we still be a representative republic if we elected the president with popular vote?
I'm still looking for a definition (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/05/13/is-the-united-states-of-america-a-republic-or-a-democracy/) that requires the electoral college.

If a candidate had the majority of the votes but 35 states voted overwhelmingly for the other, I would question the statement that they won the popular vote.

Pretty offensive to have someone claim that if you're a gun owner, you're an abuser of some kind, and apparently if you're not a gun owner, you shouldn't touch a gun, because you're probably an abuser of some kind (at least if you're a male).

Military Arms Channel posted a synopsis of a conversation he had with Dan Crenshaw about that. I meant to go back and read it in detail but I haven't. I recall seeing that he said Crenshaw would not support any existing red flag law or bill so I am not sure where he stands. I need to go back and read that. I hope he was just unaware of just how bad that laws are, but we will see. Crenshaw isn't from my district, but I figure he will rise to higher office at some point if he doesn't screw it up.

I sure hope that's the case. I've been very impressed with most everything else I have heard from him. The "pro red flag" thing (and it may be MSM reporting, not his stance) really threw me for a loop.

Here is a quote from MAC's patreon page. I don't know if he posted it anywhere else and I don't want to re-post the whole thing.
1) He does not and will not support any currently proposed red flag law. He did say we should have a discussion with the anti-gunners about their merits, but he absolutely does not support and will not vote for anything being proposed at this time.
He said Crenshaw referenced a CATO institute study/article. He said he asked for a link to the specific study he was referring to, but he found this list of related links on that site.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's promise to boost federal funding for social programs should not be considered "free stuff," because they are in fact "public goods," the New York Democrat said in a Monday tweet.
"People like to say, 'Oh, this is about free stuff.' This is not about free stuff," she said during the town hall. "I never want to hear the word, or the term, 'free stuff,' ever again."

Well, in this case, to a degree I sort of agree with her. A lot of what she's endorsed already exists. Of course, expanding on stuff that's already been given away for free still makes it free stuff.
But when you get to Elizabeth Warren and the rest of the Dem field outdoing themselves with an ever-increasing litany of new programs that are, apparently, universal, fundamental human rights and MUST be free, then we have a problem.
Free universal child care! Because it's society's responsibility to pay for a kid(s) you can't afford.
Free universal college education! Because you NEED that degree in Comparative Gender Norms of Underwater Basketweaving to ask the guy at the drive in if he wants fries with his value meal.
Free universal income of $1,000 a month? A Freedom Dividend? Haven't we learned from Federal Wefare programs that nothing is quite so enslaving as free money?
Yeah, you get the idea.

I continually find it fascinating that the far left always talks about "working folks" but then treats anything that's not at least a 4 year university degree in a white collar subject as some kind of deplorable redneck punishment.
"How dare you suggest not everyone can get a degree in astrophysics? Only a racist would suggest someone go to welding school because they can't do physics. Everyone is a winner!"

I'd like it if we started failing people who shouldn't be high school graduates and make a high school diploma worth something, so thousands of jobs that just require basic competence can just start requiring a high school diploma.
Oh, and provide a high school track for people without the capability or inclination to go to college, as well.

She said it's "notoriously difficult" to get disability.
I think this may be true, to some degree. At work, I interact with patients/attorneys who are filing for Social Security disability. Apparently everyone is turned down at the first attempt. It seems to take quite a long time, and many exams and evaluations before you are approved. I think it goes quicker if you have an experienced attorney, as opposed to doing it yourself. I think also that once you get disability, you have to be periodically re-evaluated for it to continue.

Millcreek is the expert here, but my layperson's perspective is that it seems to be both easy and difficult to get disability. Seems like people who would actually benefit more from exercise and diet can get the damn plates and drive around stores in a scooter, while people who have real issues that can't easily be solved through diet and other non-medical intervention methods have to fight for a year or two to get help.
I'm probably a big meanie, but half the people I see with plates seem to weight twice what they should. I realize some of that is medical conditions, but I think a lot of it is poor self-care.

In the meantime, my crappy bronze plan just went up another $100/mo and I'm seriously thinking about throwing my principles out the window today, the last day of open season, and going on the exchange to get the subsidy. With all the expenses and deductions I had this year, I might just squeak under the $48K MAGI.

Of course she's mad. She HATES choice. That's why she's in the "medicaid for everyone!" No choice needed, necessary, or allowed!
-
Millcreek is the expert here, but my layperson's perspective is that it seems to be both easy and difficult to get disability.
Handicap plates are not the same as SS disability.
You're right in that nearly anyone can get a handicap plate/tag, but to get Social Security to cut you a check every month is a different story. Remember, FedGov will quickly and easily take your money, but getting money from DC requires mountains of paperwork, a red-tape scythe, and a congressman in your pocket.
-

Of course you're right. I did not engage my brain on that one. :)

Funny how she wasn't complaining that Congress gave itself better plans than it gave others.
None of them should get any benefits. It shouldn't be a cushy job that people get comfortable in.

But I have heard it can be easy if you get the right doctor to sign off on it. Hard to say since I have no idea if the SSN actual does any enforcement on it.
In general, free money tends to attract fraud.

Ive got a little direct observation of the SSDI process.
My wife's brother developed serious and debilitating heart problems a few years ago (while I believe his health issues are mostly self inflicted by way of recreational pharmaceuticals is mostly irrelevant). He was a carpet and flooring installer, it can be very hard work. He has approximately 65% heart function, an un-treatable aneurism type thing as well as a few other issues that prevent him from doing the only job he knows. So not capable of any sort of manual labor, not really capable of retraining into a tech field without starting at zero. Even my cynical self concedes he is "disabled". He fought the system for almost 3 years and 4 hearings to get his approval.
My daughter-in-law's sister developed fibromyalgia. she applied for SSDI. When she got in front of the judge for the 1st hearing, along with whatever medical documentation she had she told the judge she should get SSDI because she has the same condition as her mother and her mother gets SSDI. Approved.
My sister has suffered several strokes and is confined to a wheel chair and lives in a nursing home, mostly unable to care for herself, a ward of the state. has to regularly have someone fight just to keep her on whatever medicaid/welfare/ disability coverage she gets. It's not like she is going to get better, ever.
So, my experience tells me that the more actually disabled you are and truly deserving of SSDI the more difficult it is to get it.

Bit of a tangent to the article, but does anyone know what that map means? I couldn't find a legend in a quick search. I'm interested in seeing if she says she has affected elections at the blue dots or if her money is going there to affect future elections. And is it R vs D, or far left D vs currently elected D? It sounds kinda like she wants to kick out dems who aren't commie enough.

Typical socialist behavior... your money is mine, but my money is never yours.
I couldn't figure out what the map was, either, but I did a quick scan of the article. The impression I got is that she's backing hard left contenders to run against established moderate Dems. Essentially she's trying to party harder left, and it's creating a lot of bad feelings and setting up a potential schism inside the party.
Which makes me a very sad panda...

Agreed. She seems to be interested in funding a socialist/communist revolution within the Democratic party. I hope the Ds keep that in mind when Ms. AOC proposes bills that are important to her and her constituents.

Careful... it's not a subsidy. It's a credit. Big difference.
Essentially it's just putting part of your premium on layaway against a presumed end-of-year tax "refund" will cover the deferred amount. If the tax overpayment isn't enough to cover the credit, they come a' knockin' for the difference. I learned the hard way.

No, I realize that. I actually (go ahead and hate me fellas) did it this year, but have cash aside in case things don't work out and they come a knockin'.
I'm just figuring I paid for me and somebody else for the last four years, so unless something changes for the better, I'm now recovering some of that money, at least if I can keep my income in the zone. I just got sick of paying nearly ten grand a year for a physical and blood work.

Revolution often implies a change of direction. I think she's trying to accelerate what the dem party has already been gradually evolving into already over the past few decades.

Except McDonald's. Small, medium and large are all $1 at Mickey D's. Somehow, that must be evidence of inequality, too, but I haven't figured out quite how to spin it.

Do they? Haven't walked into a McDs in ages but I do go through the drive through from time to time but always just order the sandwich and never pay attention to the drinks and thus never their prices.
But you're right, she would find a way to spin it.
-
Yes, and it is economic brilliance. First, more people come because the drinks are cheap. Then you can let people grab their own cup instead of losing the employee time of handing them one, or in the case of kiosks, what employee? Only thing I would change is if you are going to have different size cups make the lids all the same size to reduce supply chain and waste from people that can't read grabbing or stocking the wrong lid.
-
These stupid *expletive deleted*s want Venezula so bad they can taste it.
-
Also, her "wage logic" is ridiculous. If you apply it completely, then guess what, if somebody is making $30/hr and their company drops in value by half, then the company gets to pay them $15/hr.
Everybody wants to ride the, "But the company made $10 million dollars last year! Pay me more!" train, but they won't get on the, "The company is $10 million in the red this year, I'd better take a salary reduction to help them out" train.

“Well, you didn’t make those widgets, did you?” Ocasio-Cortez began. “Because you employed thousands of people and paid them less than a living wage to make those widgets for you. You didn’t make those widgets.”
“You sat on a couch while thousands of people were paid modern day slave wages, and in some cases real slave, real modern-day slavery, uh, depending on where you are in terms of food production,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed. “You made that money off the backs of undocumented people. You made that money off the backs of black and brown people being paid under a living wage.”
She didn't mention Chinese or Asian unless she was lumping them in with "brown".
Why are those wages "less than a living wage"? Would that be because of the onerous taxes and regulations that Ocasio-Cortez also supports? Or the high cost of Govt regulated health care? She is from New York so I include her fellow democrats there as well as in the federal govt.
I don't know many successful business owners. I don't remember hearing of a lazy one who was successful unless they sold it off. I wonder if her experience (if it is real) is with the hired CEO's rather than actual owners. Y'all might have come across more of those people than I have.
-
I think a prima facie argument could be made that unless there are vast hordes of zombie factory workers that I am unaware of, those wages are indeed "living wages". =D
I would like to hear her explanation on why the wages aren't "living" wages in the socialist economies of places like China, where much of these widgets are being made. Are they not enforcing most of her ideas?

Says the chick who went from waitressing to congress...
I have learned a ton browsing reddit over the last few months, though. The vitriol over the "bootstraps" phrase is real. Leftists hate it, because it was historically a phrase that did mean to do something impossible. Somehow it got co-opted to mean dig yourself out of poverty, but in reality it is an impossible action to perform. So telling a leftist to dig themselves out of poverty by their bootstraps is triggering now...
-
A radio guy this morning commented that AOC has never found herself stuck in sticky mud in Louisiana. To paraphrase: You have to use the boot straps to pull your leg up out of the mud so you can step forward. Essentially you are pulling yourself up by your bootstraps rather than stand there waiting for someone to come help you.
I have no idea what the origin of the phrase is, but to me it always meant to get to work and move up through your own efforts.

That actually makes a lot of sense for origin. I bet there are other "bootstrap" stories for similar predicaments that mean the same thing - you did it yourself.

The scary part is the people who truly, truly, truly believe it, versus the ones that do the "socialism is cool" peer pressure stuff - kinda like wearing your Che shirt.
We had a link here not to long ago about some woman needing a place to stay that had to be free, in fact I think you had to give her pot and money or something, and a whole lot of other demands she had, and some were wondering if it was parody, but I think it is all too real. There is some subset of people that actually, truly believe that it's their right to have free stuff that must be provided to them, and it's like the people that would be forced to provide it don't exist.
I truly hope that it is a very small segment of our population, but some days I wonder.

Everyone saw this coming. Democrats fought tooth and nail to keep census forms from inquiring about an individual's citizenship status. They won, so now people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are urging illegal aliens to fill out census forms so Democrats like herself can keep their bogus congressional districts.
On NBC's "Late Night With Seth Meyers" on Thursday, AOC said it was important for everyone in America, including illegal aliens, to fill out census forms for the purpose of congressional representation and funding for federal programs.

Easy. That charge is barely an inconvenience.
Ahem
I can do the most good for women of color and under served minorities by remaining here in Congress. The radical right, racist groups, and Wall Street see that my kind of legislation is a clear threat to their stranglehold on the economy and have funneled millions into unseating me in the primary. Thankfully, due to donations from like minded people and other organizations committed to righting the historic racial wrongs of this country have enough money to fight off the Right's attacks

AOC wants the Army off twitch
“It’s incredibly irresponsible for the Army and the Navy to be recruiting impressionable young people and children via live streaming platforms," Ocasio-Cortez told Motherboard. "War is not a game, and the Marine Corps’ decision not to engage in this recruiting tool should be a clear signal to the other branches of the military to cease this practice entirely.”
The U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force all run esports teams and connect with potential recruits via Twitch. The Army and Navy both banned viewers from their channels for discussing American war crimes. The ACLU said the move may have violated the first amendment, and the Knight First Amendment Institute has sent letters to the Army and Navy telling them to stop censoring Twitch viewers.

I heard South Texas Nuclear lost at least one unit due to the freeze. I did not hear exactly why.
Not sure how they do it at the nuke plant, but everyone gets complacent down here on the Gulf Coast since we rarely see temps more than 5 degrees below freezing. Once you drop below that, things that don't normally freeze start freezing. Damaged insulation doesn't get repairs, lines that would be insulated further north are not insulated here. I can think of at least one water line we did not insulate a few years ago (we argued about it) froze and cracked. I also hear plants further north enclose critical areas in buildings and such. In our case, we just don't put enough effort into maintaining robust freeze protection. That might change since global warming is obviously causing all this and it will get worse.
-

It's likely not making the news right now because of larger issues, but it will interesting to see the number of ruptured pipes in homes throughout Texas when this is over. I bet plenty of people there haven't ever even thought of things like insulating outside pipes, keeping faucets dripping, etc. With the overall numbers right now, I bet people with burst plumbing will run into the low hundreds of thousands.

I know we've talked about this here before, but I'd rather like if the green movement would start backing nuclear. We need more nuclear infrastructure, but it's hard to compete on price vs "stuff we can burn". If greenies are going to use regulation and economic controls to manipulate the energy market, please, please do it in a way that gets us a solution that makes sense - nuclear.

There's no need or reason to give them a vote. When the idea has been floated of making Puerto Rico a state, they have basically said FU -- only if you make Spanish the official language. In other words, they don't want to be one of the United States of America -- they want to make everyone else part of the Estados Unidos de Puerto Rico.

I agree with letting PR go off on their own. Besides what is always in the news, I have heard too many stories from acquaintances that have lived there or stayed for extended periods to believe it would be nothing but a giant welfare office lobby. The left likes to use the word "systemic" a lot these days. The hand-out culture in the PR is systemic. Not to mention the bureaucratic shenanigans. Cuba can have them.
I wonder how many millions of dollars of physical emergency aid is still sitting on pallets all over the island.

At least I'm seeing even democrats call her out on this. She could have taken the $30,000 and given it to a soup kitchen in the Bronx, and then spent whatever time she spent at the Met at the soup kitchen instead, handing out food to her poor constituents. As much as I despise her, I would have respected that.
There were suggestions in her defense that the ticket was a gift. There is a $50 per gift limit with a $100 per year limit for Congress. So if it was a gift, she should not stop at "Go" but go directly to jail.

Hypocrisy is poor rhetoric, literally nobody cares about their hypocrisy.
The left has always acted hypocritically by the rights standards, and pointing it out has never done any good because they have their own standards of behavior. The end justifies the means.
Nobody cares because intuitively folks understand the left is playing to win and will do anything to accumulate power.
Pointing out they aren't playing by the "rules" is a losing argument IMHO.
Compromising with the left is a losing strategy also.

Eh. The designer of the dress who attended with AOC (who apparently has had some issues paying taxes … among other things - like the bill on her $1.6 million house) is dating a guy worth $100 million or more.
I don’t know what AOC really thinks, but given the kinds of extremely wealthy people she surrounds herself with I don’t get the impression that she was threatening other attendees.

One set of rules for the masses, another set of rules for the elite. Typical Soviet equity. And in typical Soviet fashion it's a crime against the people if you complain.

That was the first thing that came to my mind. This is classic Soviet Era stuff. Modern equivalent of the peasants she represents in bread lines while she's hanging out in Gagra.

And that might have been the whole reason for her visit to Florida.

Yep

I can't disagree with the above, especially with what she did during her border visit. She tends to lean towards the slimy side of, "the ends justify the means." Plus she's kind of a high school mean girl.

I don’t see where faking it plays well for her. The people in her district have school kids eating outside. They have to show vaccine id to eat. They won’t care for the rules for thee but not for me. Plus blows a hole in the unvaxxed are dangerous narratives. Triple vaxxed and gets it. If it was because you were partying with unvaxxed drag queens then why? You lecture us not to yet you did. Since when has that ever stopped her? But don't worry, she'll top it soon, she always does. 99% of what comes out of her mouth sounds like something a spoiled 5 year old who can't see past today would come up with to mess with things when they don't get their way. You're looking at it with the mindset of an adult.
And yet she gets reelected. what does that say about her constituency?

Is she married or not?
NEW: Is AOC married?
Her office says no, but she's identified Riley Roberts as her "spouse" in four filings with the House Ethics Committee so far in 2023.
The committee has a strict definition of spouse — "someone to whom you are legally married."
— Andrew Kerr (@AndrewKerrNC) September 13, 2023
And this may be why she's hiding it
If AOC is indeed married, her spouse's finances are now subject to public disclosure.
But she did not disclose any of Roberts’s reportable stock holdings, assets, or income on her latest financial disclosure, though she did make two references to her "spouse" in the filing. pic.twitter.com/USREG8xvdI
— Andrew Kerr (@AndrewKerrNC) September 13, 2023
...four legal filings submitted to the House Ethics Committee pertaining to AOC’s overseas travels in 2022 and 2023 suggest the pair have been legally married at least since Jan. 13, 2023. If that is the case, the "Squad" member can no longer leverage the so-called boyfriend loophole to evade public disclosure of his finances.

Which is why conservatism is a doomed strategy. Conservatives oppose everything...even conservatism. Like it or not, making progress requires progressives. What we need is just better progressives, but it would probably take an entire new party. For a glimmering moment it looked like something resembling an improved progressivism would come out of the alt-right, or early-stage DeSantis, but the culture wars are very effective in impeding anything resembling progress.
-
...the culture wars are very effective in impeding anything resembling progress.
The culture wars consist of one side destroying the West by gutting her core virtues - stripping them out by erasing traditional virtues (progressively) from generation to generation; while another side tries (even if feebly) to resist the onslaught. The only hope for progress is that the latter group succeed.
So, yes, the culture war impedes progress. The "conservative" side has to win, so we can put the war behind us.
-

The conservative side can never win. By definition. Conservatives are simply fighting for what progressives supported 20 years previous. It's like saying that you can win a war by slowing down the enemy front. You simply get overrun. You have to oppose the enemy with enough force to push it back. Conservatives push nothing.
What we need to save America is a new progressive reform movement. American politics are broken, so it seems pretty hopeless.
-

It's like saying that you can win a war by slowing down the enemy front. You simply get overrun. You have to oppose the enemy with enough force to push it back. Conservatives push nothing.
The kind of conservatives you're describing are the kind that are not very conservative, and even if they are, don't do much about it. And you're saying all conservatives are like that ("by definition.") Well, obviously, people like that aren't going to win much of anything. But why would those be the only kind of conservatives?
We all like to complain (rightly so) about that kind of conservative. That might even describe most 21st-century American "conservatives" when it comes to most issues. But those people don't define the word. I get the feeling you just want to lash out at them, and my comment was a convenient punching bag.
What we need to save America is a new progressive reform movement. American politics are broken, so it seems pretty hopeless.
Our politics is broken because our people are broken. Fixing the people is what you're referring to as a culture war. You can't have reform or progress without fighting the culture war. In fact, that's why conservatives have been failing to conserve anything or "push" anything. It's because the Left has been waging a sustained culture war for several decades, and the Right is either not trying, or just not very good at it.
-
That might even describe most 21st-century American "conservatives" when it comes to most issues.
That's a good enough definition for me. Generalizations are generally true.
Our politics is broken because our people are broken.
Sounds like a good t shirt slogan, but what practical conclusion can we draw from that?
And it's not true. Our politics and people can be broken independently. And politics can be improved without holding out for any utopian vision of "fixing" "the people".
You can't have reform or progress without fighting the culture war
That's absolutely wrong. Most Americans are moderate and capable of agreeing or compromising on most issues. The political system makes that impossible because such agreement does not convey any political power to any party. Division conveys marginal political power, so we get division and the fires of the culture wars are stoked specifically to feed this dynamic. The culture war is a forever war that is unsolvable and is not designed to ever be solved.
-

Explain how reforming a nation's culture is any more utopian than reforming its politics. Neither assumes or relies upon the notion that the perfect society is attainable.
You describe culture war as an endless conflict that divides and weakens us. And of course it is. That's why I'm saying the Left's culture war has to be countered by the Right, or by conservatives, whatever you'd like to call them. Are you saying we can stop the division by just letting the identity politics practitioners run roughshod over everyone in their path, while we focus on progress? OK, but you've declared that our politics makes agreement or compromise impossible. So what do you suggest? I know you said we need "progressive reform," but isn't that just a t-shirt slogan?
zahc,.I'm curious what you think "culture war" means. Do you assume I'm suggesting we outlaw vices, willy-nilly, or that I think law and politics is the chief instrument for bringing about a virtuous citizenry? Because no.
Also, "Your politics is a t-shirt slogan" would be a great t-shirt slogan.

Enter John Fetterman
In the past, I’ve described the U.S. House as The Jerry Springer Show.
Today, I’m apologizing to The Jerry Springer Show. pic.twitter.com/y6wxLX5FIV

Not sure if it matters, but it was someone else that had "supposedly" fake eyelashes, and MTG criticized her for it. That's what set off AOC.

It's in the article
MTG started it then AOC jumped in being the "white savor" she is.
Greene started the fight by making a snide personal comment about Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, criticizing her 'fake eyelashes'. AOC then stepped in and the pair traded jibes before AOC said to Greene: 'Oh girl, baby girl... don't even play.'

MTG is an embarrassment to the Republican party.

I think you can throw Boebert into that briar-patch also. But, she has been quiet lately.

Personally, I think the best way for AOC and MTG to settle disputes would involve a bouncy house filled with jello.

They are just the Trump personality model with boobs.
Reality TV stars and loud personalities are what many voters seem to like these days.

Well, they gotta make their money. The older generation in congress does insider trading while the youngsters do their online stores.

Certainly Trump is an outlier as the old guy who sells gold tenner shoes.
Still, congress has become a game show where all the contestants win, no matter how crappy their performance. I'm SWAGing that 75% of critters, when they leave congress, leave as millionaires.

Also, while I still don't agree with a lot of his viewpoints, I guess I have to take back some of the stuff I was saying about Fetterman's appearance. Who knew the guy in the shorts and hoodie would be one of the sanest and based people in the room?

This is so much fun to watch with the sound off. The gestures are classic.
With the sound on, you'll just get a mild headache... #TheNitwitPontificates

Accidentally turned the sound on for a few seconds and mild is not how I would describe the headache

Turn the sound on for this one. Funny and not funny at the same time.
