There's good reason to be skeptical of claims that Christian thing X is really smuggled-in paganism, because there can be incentive on both sides to make those claims. Obviously, there's an incentive for some people to undermine Christianity by calling traditions into question, but the funny thing is that some Christians also have an ulterior motive to call those things pagan. It can be a way for some believers to be more spiritual; more pure than other Christians. There are other Christians that hear about supposed paganism, and their incentive is that it's easier to ditch the eggs or the Christmas tree than to actually do the research. (My church eschews eggs and rabbits during Easter, which I'm OK with, even though I doubt the claims of a pagan origin.)

If there's Biblical backing for a particular tradition then maybe it's worth getting wound up about.  If there isn't, at minimum it probably isn't important enough to get real invested in from a religious standpoint.  Even if it is a family tradition that you enjoy.

Isn't there at least equal incentive on to prove that long-held and beloved traditions associated with Christianity are valid regardless of the facts?

Maybe. But the point is a lot of people have an incentive to make these things out to be pagan, and they're on both the skeptical and the believing side. So you have to choose your sources carefully. Additionally, the vast majority of people aren't going to read a bunch of obscure, ancient writers (or even recent historians) to know who Mithras was, or how eggs were (or were not) used in pagan worship, so most people are getting these things 2nd or 3rd hand.

I had a fun exchange with a coworker via text a few weeks ago...

We're both Phillies fans, and I was talking about getting MLB TV to watch the season since it could be a really good one.

Our employer has gone something down the woke path with all this crap. It's not been as bad as I really thought it was going to be when it really started ramping up as COVID ended, but it was still bad enough that it's what caused me to change my APS user name.
