I don't like cooking bacon.
« on: January 29, 2015, 03:20:24 PM »
I like eating bacon, but not cooking it.

I don't like dealing with the grease and the splatter and the odor that lingers for days.  Can't someone just bring me bacon on demand?

It's kitchey, but I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Emson-Bacon-Wave-Microwave-Cooker/dp/B0016P1AFM

I can cook 7-10 slices (1 serving :D ) in about 6 min with no splater, no real mess, then pour of the grease and dishwash the gadget.

I also sometimes cook bacon in the oven. (On a rack over a foil lined cookie sheet) that one still gets you the smell but no splater.  Wait for it to cool, wad up the foil and throw away.

I know it's not purist, but the baconwave thing is pretty handy.

Another option. My technique is to put it in the oven set at 400, not preheated, and let it go for 19 minutes. Less time consuming and cleaner, especially if you line the pan with tin foil.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Hey, I'm right there with you 320s. I do 70% of my bacon cooking outside on the grill, 10% in the oven, and call me a poser, but I've been buying the Kirkland pre-cooked bacon and throwing that in the micro for 30 seconds for bacon and eggs in the morning a couple of times a week.

I saw this video on Gentlemint the other day, and might try it sometime:

Wife1 taught me about sticking it in the µwave for about a minute per slice, covered with a paper plate to prevent splatter from gooing up the µwave walls.

Works with hard salami, too, if you want something crispy and flavorful for a Dagwood Sandwich addition and don't have any bacon around.

Hint: don't lay the bacon or salami on paper towels to absorb the grease.  The slices stick to it and you can't remove the paper.   I sometimes use two µwave-proof containers nested together with holes in the top one to allow grease to drip off into the bottom one, but they're a pain in the tush to clean.

That is how I prefer to do it.... I use parchment paper under the bacon.
I've heard that using a metal rack placed on a cookie sheet is even less messy.

Cook a bunch of bacon up at once, put the extra in a ziploc bag and stick it in the freezer to put on sandwiches. Yum.

I don't understand this concept of "extra" bacon.

I cook my bacon in the oven at home.

In a cast iron pan.

Nuking bacon I've precooked works for sammiches.

If you don't like the smell of bacon I'm afraid you are a lost cause, sorry  :'(

Hormel has a box of bacon.  Several sealed packets in a box.  4 slices of uncooked bacon in a sealed packet.  You put the sealed packet in a microwave for around 3 +/- minutes depending on how crunchy you likes your bacon.  It cooks up in the sealed packet and you removes it and then you eats it.  No muss, no fuss.  And the kitchen has just enough of a good bacon smell that you probably puts in another packet and you cooks it and you eats it too.

I'm in the oven camp.  Line a cookie sheet with Al foil and put a rack on top of that, so that the bacon sits above all the grease.  400 F with no preheat sounds about right, as does ~20 minutes.  Clean up is very easy and the grease isn't very bad.  This technique works wonders for cottage bacon.  :)
