Ghost Ring Sights

I am continually amazed at how well ghost ring style sights work. I have always thought they were awesome on my Garand and M1A, but also have them on my Marlin lever gun and my 10/22.

I had the 10/22 at the range this morning because I want to start leaving it next to the porch door for varmints, and wanted to check my zero. Fifty yards away, on a knee and barely seeing the ten ring with my old eyes, but centering up the ring and post, everything just goes in the ten ring, with even some bullseyes. I can barely do that with my red dot ARs. 

Anyway, just a great, intuitive design (IMO).

My only problem with ghost rings and peep sights, is in a low light situation I cannot see the front post through the rear aperture.

I found this out the hard way bear hunting in 2015.

Try it again in your backyard at twilight.

I was thinking peep sights can be a bit imprecise when it comes to longer range (100 yards or more).  I think they get you down to minute of paper plate pretty easily, but you aren't going to shoot 1" groups with them.  Shooting off the bench isn't what they are best for anyway so really just a nitpick.

I think you mean ghost rings.

Folks shoot out to 1000 yards + with peeps all the time.

I think they are neat, but I can't hit anything with peep sights in dim light.

For sure. Conventional notch and post not immune. Low light and I lined up one of the front sight protector wings. 20 yard shot on stationary deer, scared the crap out of it.

If it's too dark for ghost rings, it's probably too dark for PID.

Got a set of ghost rings on my Marlin .30-30.  Accurate enough, 3" at 100 yards kneeling.  I don't care for the front site, it's a thin post sticking up all unprotected.  I like the one Ben has much better - at least from a strength standpoint.

Yeah.  Front sight hoods should be a ring, not wings.

I always liked the NM sights on my M1A with the flip choice of 2 apertures. I wish they were more common or available for other rifles.
