Seen reports of a bird strike causing issues.

Mallards are typically no bigger (often smaller) than the chickens used for bird strike testing.  Unless a whole flock went into the engine it shouldn't have been THAT big a deal.

As fast as they hit that wall I don't think a gear down landing would have saved them.  They must have landed super long for that runway.

I looked at landing video, located the viewpoint and best guess is the touchdown  was more than halfway down the runway, with <4000 feet left.
It was also fast with a clean configuration, given speed, altitude and limited power from bird damage this was a bit like an ‘impossible turn’, crew likely would have chosen to keep flaps in because they would be worried about running out of altitude.
Given unfamiliar situation crew may have misjudged the turn and approach and with limited power flaps may have been slow to deploy.

Yes it is.

IF they had a bird strike that caused engine issues then I can very well see them getting wrapped around the axle with the engine malfunction and possible shutdown of said engine distracting them from completing or even starting the landing checklist. They would also have to override or ignore an alarm or two about altitude and gear. Some details still fuzzy, did they declare an emergency or did they decide to drive it in on one engine or one engine while watching the other. The black boxes will be easy to find and hopefully they survived the impact and fire because that is where the answers will be found.

How likely is that to happen?  There have been some pretty horrible crashes with surviving data. 

I was sort of mentally comparing that likelihood to the likelihood of someone deleting the data.  Not sure why they would do that.

Probably crashed because it doesn't have wings.  Even I know that an airplane works better with wings.

If both recorders lost the last four minutes, that's not crash damage. That suggests power failure so they weren't recording.

Yeah, I just saw that - looks like maybe the starboard landing gear collapsed after a particularly hard landing on said gear.  Reports are that gusting winds and snow had caused at least a couple of go arounds for other aircraft.  Descent rate looks awfully fast, maybe a windshear just before the threshold? Re-watching that video I don't see a significant change in the descent rate as they're landing, but I do see a roll to the right just prior to landing.

That could have been because of the weather, with gusting winds you probably don't want to try and float it in, you want to get is on the deck as quick as you can. But there is a fine line between firm and planting!

In no way shape of form I'm I saying this had anything to do with the crash but ads bragging about how their aircrews are all female is not helping the airline in the minds of a lot of people.

Either way they hit too hard with no apparent flare before touch down which was more than likely caused by the wind from what I've seen so far.
