Seen reports of a bird strike causing issues.

We're now hearing more about the situation on the plane before it crashed.

According to local media, a passenger on the flight sent a text message to a family member saying that a bird "was stuck in the wing" and that the plane couldn't land.

"Should I leave my last words" the passenger wrote.

The relative said they were unable to reach the passenger on the plane again.

And then this, a suggestion that with everything going on after a bird strike the crew forgot to lower the gear

A little earlier our colleagues on the news channel heard from Geoffrey Thomas, an aviation expert and commentator.

He explains: "It appears as though there has been a bird strike and one of the engines, the right-hand engine was impacted. This would have caused a lot of pressure in the cockpit."

He says that "with all the checking and cross-checking going on relating to this engine failure, it could well be that [the] pilots simply forgot to put the landing gear down".

Pilots see warnings near Muan Airport at this time of year for flocks of mallard birds, which can be very large, Thomas says.

Mallards are typically no bigger (often smaller) than the chickens used for bird strike testing.  Unless a whole flock went into the engine it shouldn't have been THAT big a deal.

As fast as they hit that wall I don't think a gear down landing would have saved them.  They must have landed super long for that runway.

Well more details have come in about this terrible crash in Korea, with confirmation of a go around and a bird strike.
I looked at landing video, located the viewpoint and best guess is the touchdown  was more than halfway down the runway, with <4000 feet left.
It was also fast with a clean configuration, given speed, altitude and limited power from bird damage this was a bit like an ‘impossible turn’, crew likely would have chosen to keep flaps in because they would be worried about running out of altitude.
Given unfamiliar situation crew may have misjudged the turn and approach and with limited power flaps may have been slow to deploy.

To be clear, other angles show it touched runway earlier, but continued to fly, floating in ground effect over half the runway length before settling onto the runway.

An early report I saw yesterday said the bird strike caused the landing gear to malfunction -- which made zero sense. The pilots' forgetting to lower the gear is a far more reasonable and understandable explanation.

Yes it is.

IF they had a bird strike that caused engine issues then I can very well see them getting wrapped around the axle with the engine malfunction and possible shutdown of said engine distracting them from completing or even starting the landing checklist. They would also have to override or ignore an alarm or two about altitude and gear. Some details still fuzzy, did they declare an emergency or did they decide to drive it in on one engine or one engine while watching the other. The black boxes will be easy to find and hopefully they survived the impact and fire because that is where the answers will be found.

According to officials the Cockpit voice recorder and data recorder on the Jeju Air flight recorded no data for the last 4 minutes. So We're unlikely to know exactly why they elected to make a fast turn and fast, gear up landing.
It's clear a lot of electrical systems stopped working, and that may have driven decisions, but examination of the wreckage may tell us whether the wrong engine was shutdown, or whether the gear was damaged.

How likely is that to happen?  There have been some pretty horrible crashes with surviving data. 

I was sort of mentally comparing that likelihood to the likelihood of someone deleting the data.  Not sure why they would do that.

Most of the video captured shows the radio tower falling.  Video said it was a private flight.

Probably crashed because it doesn't have wings.  Even I know that an airplane works better with wings.

If both recorders lost the last four minutes, that's not crash damage. That suggests power failure so they weren't recording.

Yeah, I just saw that - looks like maybe the starboard landing gear collapsed after a particularly hard landing on said gear.  Reports are that gusting winds and snow had caused at least a couple of go arounds for other aircraft.  Descent rate looks awfully fast, maybe a windshear just before the threshold? Re-watching that video I don't see a significant change in the descent rate as they're landing, but I do see a roll to the right just prior to landing.

That could have been because of the weather, with gusting winds you probably don't want to try and float it in, you want to get is on the deck as quick as you can. But there is a fine line between firm and planting!

In no way shape of form I'm I saying this had anything to do with the crash but ads bragging about how their aircrews are all female is not helping the airline in the minds of a lot of people.
Before someone says it's was a Delta flight yes it was but was operated by Endeavor Air

I wonder if a gust as the plane was touching down might have pushed it off the centerline far enough that either the right landing gear or the tip of the right wing caught the snow berm and that initiated the rollover.

Either way they hit too hard with no apparent flare before touch down which was more than likely caused by the wind from what I've seen so far.
