August 12 is when they end.

A reason to live!  Thank you.

I think we need to remember the brits have their own...sense of humor. And NBC did say early on they realized they weren't going to top Bejing so were just going to do their own thing.

I actually thought it was alright up until the stupid house thing. The Queen and James Bond I liked...all it missed was some jackass giving a speech during God save the Queen.

Oh and the French. The IOC has two official languages, English and French with French being the primary language. So anything there is a documentation discrepancy the French documentation has supremacy. Protocol is that announcements be made in French first, then English. I think there's also a provision for some other languages like German and Spanish somewhere down the line from that but didn't notice it last night. And the home countries language is announced last if not part of the normal rotation.
That is all. *expletive deleted*ck you all, eat *expletive deleted*it, and die in a fire. I have considered writing here a long parting section dedicated to each poster, but I have decided, at length, against it. *expletive deleted*ck you all and Hail Satan.

My issue. The first two culture shifts where very general and stayed in a very specific theme, driven by the group of English upper class men. But then it switched to a series of unrelated segments, all of which had neat things (i'm ignoring the politics of the NHS, as it's british, these are the british games, they get to do what they want) but caused the overall to become disjointed and lacking in good transition. I think they should have ephisised culture throughout, using the evolution of the arts as an overall transition, especially as they started with traditional regional folk songs and the Tempest.

I didn't like the house segment that much either. The little love story thing detracted majorly from the montage of British rock.

The 2012 London Olympics theme:

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives. A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy or perhaps both"

If anyone can explain the opening ceremony to me, please let me know.

We were sober and sans drugs, and it made little sense to us.

Even the commentary made us say "Uh, OK....?"

At first, I thought it was a remake of Lord of the Rings with a trip to Isengard and the forging of the One Ring.  But then Mr. Bean made everything better.  Although I was bummed that none of my hospitals have the singing and dancing nurses and patients.

My wife said the very same thing. The Beatles, Stones, Who, Queen and various rap artists but no Elton.

They didn't have a lot, but at the same time, they have a lot to begin with.
I'm just glad they had Bowie. I was more sad that TRex was not used. Children of the Revolution would have fit, too.

No kidding. If the announcer had not said something, we would still have no idea what GOSH meant.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I thought the whole "Look at us, we have socialized medicine!" thing was just strange. Who were they trying to impress, Obama?

I have had personal and business relationships with a number of people in the British healthcare system. Based on that, and several trips to the UK, I am of the belief that the average Brit is pretty proud of the NHS and its mission of providing at least a basic level of healthcare to all residents of the UK.  They often see us as the backward savages for failing to do so for our own people.

In that same vein, an interesting article from the NYT on using a medical model from Iran in rural Mississippi.

Am I the only one who finds some measure of irony in the televised shooting sports airing on MSNBC? Just realized the skeet final is on today at 9am est on msnbc.

Skeet is allowed because it is a gentlemanly sport, old chap. Blued steel and walnut guns. Proper dress. Much more civilized than those ruffians with handguns shooting at silhouettes (how disturbing!).

They must shoot at my local public range. Their trigger control has been horrible. The Chinese teams gun handling was insanely bad.

Though Rhode did just get 99 out of a 100  =)

Skeet and trap shooters are not known for their safe gun handling skills: resting the muzzle on their toes, starting with their finger on the trigger, light triggers and no safeties.

True enough.

Wonder if there's a provision to ding them for piss poor handling. Swear I saw the one Chinese girl sweep half of the damned crowd with a locked action.
