"When crime becomes a political problem, Democrats find nothing better to do than resort to cops, prisons and other Republican-branded strategies to address it."
The contempt that American leftists have for law enforcement is on display throughout this article every time Porter implies that the police are some sort of right-wing scheme.

"Modern" in the sense that the modern era in Western civilization begins somewhere around the year 1500, and ends sometime in the past 50 years.
With the modern age, we eventually got modern policing, and the use of incarceration (instead of execution, torture, or corporal punishment) for most serious crimes. That started not with the Republican Party (nor with slave patrols as some race-obsessed Marxists would like to believe), but in Europe (if memory serves), especially with Robert Peel's "bobbies."
So just another data point for my modern v post-modern model, I guess. They think they're rejecting the right. They're really rejecting the modern age. "In favor what?" is the frightening question.
